The Wolverines fell to nationally-ranked Iowa, 2-0, Saturday, and the following day tied Ohio State, 2-2, in double overtime. IN THE LOSS to the Hawkeyes, Michigan gave up both goals late in the first period.b ental errors plagued the Wolverines as Iowa dominated play, outshooting Michigan, 15-8. Iowa also had fifteen penalty corners to the Wolverines' one. Against Ohio State Michigan let one get away. OSU scored first at 5:04 of the first period, but the Wolverines came on strong in the second half with goals by Jane Nixon and fellow senior Trisha Mondul. THE BUCKEYES came back to tie the score with four minutes to play. The Wolverines outplayed the Buckeyes statistically, outshooting OSU, 24-19, and holding the advantage in penalty corners, 11-4. Head coach Karen Collins praised the play of Trisha Mondul. "She had an excellent weekend all around," Collins said. "One on one she played well, very effective." COLLINS provided the play-by- play for Nixon's goal. "The goal scored against Ohio State was the end result of a give-and-go between Sara Clark and Jane Taylor," she said. "Jane (Nixon) finished it off. She put the whipped cream on top." The Wolverines continue their Big 10 schedule this weekend with a rematch against OSU. "It will be a real important game," Collins said. "We still feel we beat them. "WE'LL HAVE to correct the mistakes we made. We spent a majority of the game in their end and didn't capitalize on it." Heading into the OSU game, Michigan is ranked fourth in the Midwest. One of Collins' preseason goals was to be ranked in the Midwest. "It (the ranking) shows respectability," she said. "Purdue's ranked lower and we have to beat them to stay up there." Michigan 's marked tie OSU improvement over a year ago can be seen in the team's 6-4-1 record. "I'm pleased with how we played against Iowa," Collins commented, "but we let down against Ohio State. We really should have won, but the defense made a lot of mistakes." Women harriers finish second By JIM DOWNEY The women's cross-country team finished a surprising second at last weekend's Western Ontario Invitational. The Wolverines' performance. was surprising considering the squad was without senior scorers Kelli Bert and Melissa Thompson. BERT, expected to lead the team this year, is sidelined with injuries. Thompson, a 1984 NCAA indoor track All- American, is suffering from a virus. "The losses are tough, but fortunately, we've run well without them," said Michigan coach Sue Parks. Mindy Rowand, a freshman from Laurel Springs, New Jersey, played an integral part in picking up the slack left by the injured upperclassmen. Rowand raced over the 5000- meter course to a fourth-place finish. The twelve team field was headed by Penn State, which appears destined to repeat as one of the top ten teams in the nation. Although the Wolverines were pleased with their finish, they must go back to work in preparation for Friday's Ohio State Invitational in Columbus. Parks hopes Thompson will be ready to run, but if she is not ready, the younger runners will face another stiff test. Associated Press Hold it right there!
