Shop owner allegedly
assaults 'U' student

By M E BLISSABuKS
A University student says he is
pressing assault charges against
the owner of the Student Bike Shop
for allegedly -punching the
student during an argument.
Ann Arbor police are inves-
tigating the assault, which
allegedly occurred Friday at the
shop on Forest Street.
ACCORDING to Sgt. Harry
,Jinkerson of the Ann Arbor
,,Police Department, LSA senior
Peter Cook said he had an
argument with Bill Loy, the
'owner of the shop.
When Loy would not return
Cook's receipt, Cook grabbed it
from the owner's wife and the
°owner said, "Don't touch my
:wife." He then allegedly hit Cook
in the jaw, Jinkerson said.
Loy could not be reached for
comment.

Cook said he was returning a
rented bike before the 30-day
rental period ended because the
bike was damaged. Loy assessed
the damage at $55, and held Cook
responsible even though he told
him the bike appeared to
sabotaged.
COOK said he asked the owner
to send him an itemized list of the
bike's damages because he
wanted to take the case to Student
Legal Services.
The owner threatened to take
Cook to court, he said. "I said,
'Fine, just give me my receipt,'"
Cook said.
The owner's wife was holding
the receipt, Cook said, and when
the owner refused to give it back,
Cook grabbed it from her hands.
Cook said the owner then hit
him in the jaw and threw the
receipt onto the floor.

selection for the next two years, so
the number of applications is not
as important as the quality of the
-,.applicants.
Donahue said approximately
two-thirds of the out-of-state and
one-third of the in-state applicants
are accepted on the first review.
Even though 90 percent of all
newly admitted freshmen come
from the top fifth of their high
s school class, andl6.5 percent

from the top 1 percent, Sjogren
said the University won't suffer
from a lack of diversity. The
increase in academic competition
hasn't gotten to that point, he said,
and the top 1 percent "do have
diversified interests."
The admissions office predicts
a 5 to 10 percent drop in thenumber
of applications in the 1990s
because of a decrease in the
number of graduating high school
seniors.
