But believe it or not, there were some positive aspects about Michigan in Saturday's 31-12 victory over Oregon State. At least Schembechler saw some. "THERE WERE some good things that happened in there," Schembechler said at yesterday's press luncheon. "One is winning the game. We had some good performances. "I'm particularly pleased with (tailback) Jamie Morris and (offensive lineman) John Elliott on offense." After that, however... "WE'RE STILL struggling a bit defensively," Schembechler said, perhaps referring to the fact Michigan has allowed 388 yards a game this season."Dieter Heren played extremely well. Garland Rivers is having a great year. "So we've had some performances, we just have to tighten up the defense." They'll have to tighten it up, indeed.- AFTER JUST squeaking by Notre Dame and stumbling past Oregon State, Michigan will face its toughest opponent of the 1986 season this Saturday in Florida State. The Seminoles (1-1-1) are coming off a 10-10 tie with N. Carolina after losing to Nebraska and beating Toledo. "Florida State, unfortunately, will be the best of the three we've played so far," Schembechler said. "They're a great defensive football team with an exceptional kicking game." This doesn't bode well for the Wolverines, who may not have lost any games, but have lost some key players. The list grew last weekend with injuries to linebacker Carlitos Bostic and wide receiver Paul Jokisch. Jokisch (strained groin) is doubtful for Saturday and Bostic, who injured a knee during pre-game warm-ups, may be out for the season. Those two injuries, in addition to cornerback Doug Mallory (knee), lineman Jerry Quaerna, noseguard - Mike Reinhold (ankle), and linebacker Steve Thibert (ribs) brings the total to six regulars who won't play Saturday. Schembechler is quick to point out the effect of injuries on the defense. "If I had all of the people I. started the season with I'd had no reservations about the defense," Schembechler said. "We graduated fivetof 11wstarters (on defense) and .then we lose four more." Some things have been on Schembechler's mind, indeed. SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Sickers drop two in eantown By ROB LEVINE Michigan's field hockey team, off to a good start in '86, returned from its eastern road trip yesterday with one win and two losses. The lone victory came over Rhode Island, 2-1 while it dropped the other two games to national powers Boston University, 1-0, and Boston College, 2-1. The team holds a 6-3 mark overall. KATRINA Warner starred in Michigan's victory over Rhode Island. She scored one goal in the first period at 1:19 and assisted on fellow senior Lisa Murray's goal at 11:19 of the second period. The team then took on the ninth-ranked Boston College Murray scored the lone goal at 22:00 of the first period. But, two goals by BC's Shannon Murphy proved to be too much for the Wolverines. Collins felt the game was not decided by the players, but that the refs contributed heavily to her team's downfall. "We contested both goals - Murphy's second goal was another questionable goal. "I DIDN'T think the officials called a good game - they could have called a better game. It (bad calls) was blatant." The coach continued her assault on the poor officiating. "We need two goals to compete on the road. BC was ranked 15th in the country. "It was not a good game," said Collins, "because we were as strong as they, and could play with them or anybody. It was a very encouraging game." THE SENIORS showed their experience over the weekend. Lisa Murray scored her fifth and sixth goals, but the young kids added much needed depth to the squad. Michigan opens up the Big Ten season at Ohio State on Saturday, with a game against the fourth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. The next day, the team opposes OSU. "We really believe if we can play with Iowa," Collins said, ."We can beat them. But if the game gets out of hand, we could have a tough time. "Iowa's beaten us the last couple of years, but we're stronger and need to show them that." Coach Collins believes in this year's much improved field hockey team. The squad now goes into the grueling Big Ten schedule with confidence. "We can play with the ranked teams - we don't think we're a fluke," Collins said. "I think after this weekend the other Big Ten teams will give us some respect." 'M' 2nd at EMU meet Eastern Michigan University was the battleground this past weekend as the top men's cross country teams in the state competed in the Michigan Inter- Collegiate Divisional Cross Country Championships to determine the best team in Michigan. Eastern Michigan won the early season bragging rights to the state with 37 points and was followed by coach Ron Warhurst's Michigan squad with 53 points. Rounding out the top six were Western Michigan, Michigan State, Central Michigan, and the University of Detroit. THE WOLVERINES im- proved on their fifth-place finish in last year's meet, but weren't able to overcome a tough Eastern Michigan outfit which went to the national championships last year and returned their top eight runners this year. Just as he did all of last year, returning All-American Chris Brewster led the Wolverines and garnered a first place finish in the five-mile race with a time of 24:40. Michigan dominated the front of the pack as senior Joe Schmidt finished third and junior John Scherer came in fourth. Coach Warhurst said, "We were running really strong up front, but we still need our other runners to move up." Blue Banter 'Oregon State's quarterback post-game interview. Two more runners who should improve the team's depth are freshmen Tim Fraleigh and Doug McKibbon. Warhurst elected to hold these two young runners out of the season opening meet because Fraleigh was suffering from respiratory problems and McKibbon was hampered by a sore leg. For now, the Wolverines aren't able to claim the top spot in the state of Michigan, but Warhurst sees this changing as the season progresses. "I held the two guys (Fraleigh and McKibbon) out and they should help a lot when they get back. By the end of the season, we should be able to beat Eastern," said Warhurst. - GREG MOLSON Pistons sign pair DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Pistons' two top draft picks - forwards John Salley and Dennis Rodman - signed with the team yesterday, a spokesman said. Coach Karen Collins saw some good things come from the 1-0 setback. "(Goalie) Maryann Bell had a very good game. e really played them well, but we were caught on our heels." For the weekend, Bell notched 36 saves, keeping the Wolverines competitive in all three games. COLLINS mentioned the lack of scoring punch against the highly-ranked BU squad. "We played them even, but we couldn't get a goal in the goalkeep." On Sunday, the Boston College Eagles clipped Michigan, 2-1.
