The Wolverines held a 14-12 lead at the half. Leading 24-12, Michigan ; finished the scoring in the fourth quarter with its third touchdown. Harbaugh kept the ball on the option out of a wishbone formation1 and ran 22 yards into the 1 endzone. "They were really pinching down hard," Harbaugh said. "They took away our dive read, so, I just came out on the option and the cornerback went right for the pitch. I just cut it up and fortunately outran the guy." MICHIGAN tailback Jamie Morris also outran some people Saturday. The 5-7, 179-pound junior gained 140 yards on 20 carries. "Yardage-wise it was a good game," Morris said, "but technique-wise, I fumbled the ball and I missed a few blocks that were key. "We had to run harder. I think I was running tentatively and I think the coaches felt that way too." THE INTENSITY level on the Oregon State team was a few notches higher. Playing in front of 104,748 fans was enough 'to motivate the Beavers. "It's more than three times as many fans than I've played in front of," Wilhelm said. "It's really incredible." Wilhelm managed to maintain his poise as he headed the OSU offense. His second- quarter touchdown pass accounted for the Beavers' lone touchdown. On third down and three, Wilhelm hit tight end Damon Medlock in the endzone with an eight-yard toss. WITH THE score 14-12, Kragthorpe called for a two-point conversion. But Ivan Hicks intercepted Wilhelm's pass and the Beavers had to settle for six. Harbaugh's second touchdown pass came with 5:04 left in the game. Sophomore flanker John Kolesar grabbed the 25-yard aerial between two defenders and twisted free to dash into the endzone. '85 defense haunts Blue By ADAM MARTIN Eric Wilhelm's 39-completion, 339-yard performance Saturday at Michigan Stadium left many people wondering the whereabouts of Mike Hammerstein. Hammerstein's ghost returned to the Wolverines' defense for a brief 10 minutes in the third quarter of Michigan's 31-12 victory over Oregon State. BUT FOR the remaining 50 minutes, Michigan's defense was spooked, despite holding the Beavers scoreless in the second half. In fact, the defense's finest moments - from OSU's first possession of the second half until Dieter Heren's fumble recovery with a minute to go in the third period - were rather spooky. For a minute there, defensive tackle Mark Messner, with fire in his eyes, had fans believing Michigan's 1985 defense hadhreturned. Like a phantom, however, Messner and the rest of the defense's enthusiasm disappeared. "WE FELT for a few minutes that the old Michigan defense was back," said middle guard Billy Harris, "but I don't think we had the enthusiasm today. We proved that by the way we played." What Michigan's defense proved was that .a second-tier Pac-10 team could succeed in Ann Arbor the same way they got here -- in the air. Sixty-four times the Beavers passed, and 61 percent of the time they succeeded. What Michigan's defense lacked were the uplifting QB sacks, interceptions, and head- jarring hits of a year ago. In essence, what Michigan's defense lacked was Mike Hammerstein. EXCEPT IN the third quarter, when spirits of autumn's past appeared. "We made them fumble and then came back and shut 'em down (in the third quarter)," explained junior tackle Dave Folkertsma, whose third quarter sack was Oregon State's first taste of punishment Wolverine style. "That was the real Michigan defense." Reality is indicative , according to Folkertsma, when "we don't let 'em score." But reality according to coach Bo Schembechler is more than a goose egg. "THAT'S TWO weeks in a row now that our defense has not played well," Schembechler complained, "and I'm not accustomed to standing on the sidelines and watching the other team with the ball." Undoubtedly, Schembechler was also frustrated by a Michigan defense that looked sedated for most of the game. "When a team (passes that much)," said Harris, "it's pretty tiring, but we just weren't playing like we know we can. "THERE'S enthusiasm on the outside and on the inside, in your heart. We had it on the outside, but See BLUE, Page 10 Junior tailback Jamie Morris looks for an opening in the Oregon State times Saturday, gaining 140 yards in Michigan's 31-12 victory. 'With no receptions Saturday, split end Paul Jokisch saw a personal streak of 16 straight games with a reception end Saturday: I N 1 if'hij/ i~ru. sc/ Michigan disappointing... ...The team's undefeated It's amusing to hear everyone panic because Michigan has had so much trouble in its first two games. No, not amusing, let's call it ridiculous. Let's review some of the comments: "What's wrong with Michigan?" "The defense is pitiful. They can't even stop the Pac Ten's version of Northwestern -Oregon State." "Put those national championship hopes on hold." To the eternal skeptic, these proclamations make a lot of sense because they only see the negative aspects of the team. They merely "expect" the positives. While I admit some serious problems exist, rmnot ready to panic yet. Not until I see Michigan lose. There is too much talent and depth on this team for them to lose more than one or two games. It's unfair to condemn a team that's 2- 0, even if they aren't playing well. That's enough of my off-the-cuff remarks, let's examine my reasoning. So what is wrong with Michigan? My answer is, "What is right with Michigan?" After the fans and media are done complaining about the team's victories, they get around to remembering how well Jim Harbaugh and the offense played. The new short-yardage wishbone formation works effectively and will no doubt get better as the players become used to it. Jamie Morris and the running attack look fine, except for a couple fumbles. Then there are John Kolesar and Kenny Higgins in the receiving corps. Finally, the offensive line that Bo Schembechler worried about so much in the pre-season has stayed healthy. It will only improve when Jerry Quaerna comes back from knee rehabilitation in a few weeks. Now I'm not denying the lackluster performances of the defense, but let's put things in perspective. Not surprisingly, everyone expected Gary Moeller's gang to compare to the '85 group. Well, it ain't going to be like that this year. As far as the defense went in its showing against the Pac Ten's Northwestern, we can look at in a few ways. Sure, we can jump on the bandwagon and point out Erik Wilhelm's 39 completions for 339 yards. On the other hand, we can point out the Beaver's minus 19 yards running. It's ironic, the only other time Michigan has given up more yards passing was in 1982, against Sandy Schwab and Northwestern (436 yards). Remember that? Michigan won the game 49-14. That was also the year Michigan started out badly (1-2) but still won the Big Ten crown with an 8-1 conference record. That was the last year the Wolverines went to the Rose Bowl. The injuries, no doubt, are the greatest concern. However, only one starter has really been lost on defense -Steve Thibert at outside linebacker. It then lost second stringer Carlitos Bostic, so it got down to "third stringer" John Willingham. Just a few days before the game, though, linebacker coach Tom Reed told me Willingham was zoing to split duties with Thibert and Bostic evenly. a 2 UNDERGRADUATE MEN IF YOU ARE A LEADER IF YOU ENJOY A CHALLENGE IF YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF A NEW TRADITION IF YOU WANT TO BE A FOUNDING FATHER IN THE RECOLONIZATION OF THE ALPHA KAPPA CHAPTER OF PiKAPPA PHI Come To Our OPEN RUSH STARTING MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd THROUGH WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th AT THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER IN WEST QUAD'S CAMBRIDGE HOUSE FROM 6 - 9 PM Open Mon. - Sat. 10 till 9 Sunday Noon to 5 pm NATIONAL INTERFRATERNITY CONFERENCE MEMBER FRATERNITY M~agi" 10 C'MON...
