Dancers to sizzle

The tiny rehearsal studio is
drab, dull, and dimly lit, but
that's beside the point; within
these four walls shines a six-star
constellation of talent...
The sensual, pulsating sounds
of Falco pervade the air as
choreographer Whitley Setrakian
and dancers get down to business
and begin fine-tuning their
concert repertoire. Ah, the com -
mencement of the creative pro-
cess. It takes all six dancers to
tango, so everyone's input counts.
One...two....three...four... "You
got a new movement or are you
just making that up? " one dancer
jokingly chides another.' There's
a lot of good-natured clowning.
This is a tightly-knit bunch that
believes in combining rehearsal
with fun. Even Setrakian's
infant son, Samuel, coos in
delighted approval of this
innovative and dynamic group.
This is People Dancing, an
Ann Arbor-based professional
modern dance company, and
they're preparing to set the
audience's toes a-tappin' in new-
fangled Tango time.
Whitley Setrakian, the
company's choreographer and
artistic director, is an avid
experimentalist; any and all
combinations of dance, drama,
and humor elements are fair,
game in her science. The
traditional Tango, for instance,
will never be the same after
tomorrow night's premiere of
Setrakian's newest piece "Slow
