I The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 19, 1986- Page5 New co-op remains uncompleted By ANDY MILLS The construction and renovation of several rooms, fire escapes, and hallways at Luther House on Hill St. has caused problems for many residents of the newly formed co-op. Members of the house are adjusting to the on-going construction. Some residents are doubling or tripling up until their rooms - for which they signed leases - are completed. THE CONSTRUCTION, begun over the summer, was expected to be completed by the beginning of this term, but was delayed by a wait for city approval, the late arrival of building materials, and other problems. According to Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) Executive Director Jim Jones, these delays are common in all construction projects. The ICC sent out a letter in early August informing Luther House lessees of the construction problems. Six people were without rooms when the term began. In response to residents' complaints about constuction and pleas to eliminate overcrowding, the ICC has decided to let five members of Luther House out of their leases- and the sixth has moved to a different cooperative house. BUT THE construction remains a problem to residents. According to pharmicology graduate student and Luther resident Dan TerBush, the inconvience caused by the construction is "literally a pain in the butt." One of the living rooms is cluttered with wood, sawhorses, and tools. Some residents' rooms which are in the basement are constructed, but not complete. Although the rooms are "livable," the walls are the foundation walls; no drywall is up yet and exposed pipes run across the ceiling. A date of completion has not been set for the renovations, which will ost $26,500. i Read and Use Doily Class ifileds f ~Associated Press' .# Bush greeting Vice President George Bush greets Michigan well-wishers at Michiana Regional Airport with wife Barbara, right. She said the proposed policy that virtually bans classified research is not enough to restrict harmful research and that without the review committees it would be difficult to enforce. "The committee's are important arenas for discussion," said Watts. "Without them, there wouldn't be a discussion of appropriateness of research on campus." A DOZEN protesters brought. the protest directly to the regents AflIce. Sarah Peterson of WAND( Wdmen's Action for Nuclear Disarmament), told the regents that the Pentagon has increasingly more power to determine research policy. "Currently the Pentagon has invested 7.7 million in the University and 20 to 30 million is estimated in the future-enough to possibly double the Pentagons share in the University," Peterson t said, adding that academic freedom is not compromised by changing guideliness. The University Vice-President for Research, Linda Wilson, responded to Peterson's comments by saying that she is preparing a report on classified research and that now she is "listening not commenting." ROGER Van Duynen, an Engineering student, dissagreed with the concern over whether the proposal would restrict academic freedom.. "There has to be a limit to what you can do here," he said. Rod Schoonover, a teaching assistant in chemistry, said that as a chemist he is in a vulnerable situation where his research could be used for military- related activity. 2for $7( Dinners include baked potato and salad bufftables and tw ohotIsoups- with fresh fruit, hot vegn to h aotsM. rmamiow T 'nowr"redTAr -Cn- r Sta un ikflhnt Salad ufet Wakflaers CfcmD 5 * ,3i f °i',e .. 11AM-PM on a lue 2Salad b ufe totherdotato Cannlot be sd ihother discounts.
