Men's Cross Country Michigan Inter-Collegiate At Eastern Michigan Saturday SPORTS Volleyball vs. Northwood Institute Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. IM Building Thb Michigan Daily Thursday, September 18, 1986 Page 7 a 'Improved stickers bring offense to life By PETE STEINERT Last year, goals for the field hockey team were about as common as empty seats at home football games. So far this season, the Wolverines are finding the net much more often. Their impressive 5-1 start is a direct effect of the increase in offensive output. THE WOLVERINES are averaging just over two goals per game, and they have scored in every contest including a season- high tdtal of five last Saturday against Notre Dame. These are startling figures considering this is basically the same team that managed a mere three goals all last year. "I think it's just better execution," said senior back Trisha Mondul. "WE'VE BEEN able to build an attack(in the past)," said head coach Karen Collins, "but then we'd lose it once we got within scoring distance. "Now we can maintain that scoring drive right down to the goal cage. We like to play a give and go game and work the ball in patiently." Two players who have figured prominently in the offense are senior midfielders Jane Nixon and co-captain Joan Taylor. The two missed a considerable amount of action last season due to injuries. Nixon missed all but three games and Taylor was out for six games with a broken hand. THE TWO are back now and playing in top form. Nixon scored three goals in the last two games, and Taylor played a key role in setting up scoring opportunities. Nixon, Taylor, and the rest of last year's squad returned this season determined to rebound from last year's miserable 1-14-2 season. "They came back with an attitude that they were going to be better," explained Collins, "and they worked very hard over the winter and the summer to improve their individual skills. "WHEN YOU have the same team returning, that gives them extra incentive to show people that they weren't the weak team that everybody thought they were." "I think winning the first game gave us a lot of confidence;" said Mondul, "whereas if we had lost or tied, I don't think we would have went into the rest of the games with the confidence we had." Another key element in Michigan's turnaround is the contribution of the freshmen. "They have been able to come in and make a difference right away," said Collins. FRESHMAN forward Judy Burinskas is tied for the team lead in goals with three. Burinskas along with freshman midfielder Sharon Cantor hail from Chesire High School in Connecticut where they were All- State selections. "We come from a really good program, and they prepared us well for the college level, so it wasn't a big change," said Cantor. "II feel like I've been playing with the team all winter. I've fit right in." Whether the Wolverines can carry their recent success into the Big Ten season remains to be seen. A good indication will come this weekend when Michigan travels east to face Rhode Island and nationally- ranked Boston College . and Boston University. One thing is certain, however. If the Wolverines continue to score goals, they are taking a step in the right direction. m mmm mmm COUPON mmmmmmmmmmmmmm I II!4ARMYSRU S' We stock a fullline of Clothing, boots, camping 1 backpacking equipment, U j OFF ALL and military clothing.
