Bo unveils Blue wishbone By BARB McQUADE While Notre Dame kept Michigan guessing with a number of offensive formations Saturday, the Wolverines countered with a surprise of their own. The wishbone made its way into the Michigan offense for the first time since 1978, and is expected to be used regularly in short yardage situations. "I like the idea of going with the bone," Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler said yesterday at his weekly press luncheon. "Last year on third and short, we were 72 percent effective. We decided we had to improve that phase of our football, so we thought we'd take a look at the wishbone." The formation keyed Coach picks over a bone at luncheon Michigan's third touchdown Saturday after Doug Mallory's third-quarter fumble recovery. Quarterback Jim Harbaugh completed the 27-yard touchdown pass to Jamie Morris on the first play of the possession. Schembechler credited the wishbone for throwing off the Fighting Irish defense. "They thought we were going to pound them, but we threw off it," the 18-year head coach said. "I like the idea of using a lot of formations. "I don't know whether to expand it, but I do think that there will be occasions where we'll come out on early downs and run some wishbone football." Schembechler said he sent his coaches out to study other teams that use the formation, and implemented it this fall. But despite his success with the wishbone, Schembechler said he won't rely on it heavily. One reason is Michigan's effective passing game. The wishbone is difficult to throw off of, and with Harbaugh at the helm, the formation is limiting. Michigan last used the wishbone regularly in 1971, Schembechler said, when it was not a good passing team. "The wishbone will keep you in the game," he said. "If you use it you're not going to get blown out of the ball park. It allows you to control field position." But the 1986 Wolverines aren't worried about getting blown out anywhere. The wishbone serves as simply another weapon in Michigan's already potent backfield. "AIt's fun playing around with it," Schembechler said. "I'll go into the laboratory today and have some fun with it. "That's the beauty of college football. You can't do that in pr(, football." "He did undergo surgery, and he is resting comfortably," said St. Mary's hospital spokeswoman Bobbi Fischer, who refused to give any details of the operation. IT WAS reported, however, that the surgery involved cutting away a portion of the damaged disc that extended out from the spine, without the necessity of fusing the vertebrae. The 49ers said reports on Montana's condition would be isued from time to time. career On Sunday, team physician Dr. Michael Cunningham said of the $1 million-a-year player, "There is a chance he won't play football again. I think there is a general consensus that Joe will play again, but there is also the risk that even if the surgery is successful, it won't relieve the pain." Montana, 30, has a history of back pain. The problem was aggravated during the first game of the season, while throwing a pass in the 49ers' 31-7 victory over the Buccaneers, in which he completed 32 of 46 passes for 356 yards. With Montana on the sidelines Sunday, the 49ers lost 16-13 to the Los Angeles Rams with Jeff Kemp at quarterback. Intramural Sports Building 606 E.
