"We had putting problems," moaned Wolverine head coach Sue LeClair. "We had 39, 40, 44 putts...," she continued. " (Today) and Tuesday we'll work on putting and chipping." DESPITE their putting woes,' the Wolverines finished third in the five-team Ferris State tournament, 42 shots back of tournament champ Michigan State. Michigan trailed Bowling Green, a team they beat by one stroke in last weekend's tournament at Minnesota, by 22 strokes. Ferris State and Illinois State finished fourth and fifth, respectively. . Heavy rains and flooding at Big Rapids forced the tournament to be cut from three rounds to two. But seniors Terri Mage, Jan Idomir, and Missy Bauer didn't let it rain on their parade. Mage fired rounds of 83-80 to capture eighth-place overall. Not far back were teammates Idomir, who carded rounds of 83-82, and Bauer, who brought home 80-85, to claim a tie for tenth overall. JUNIOR walk-on Krista Dunton chipped in nicely with rounds of 85-86 on the par 74 Katke course for the fourth best pair of Michigan rounds. The California native is "just getting back into the game," according to LeClair. Weather conditions were so bad at Big Rapids that "they had 12 inches of rain and lost a Tastee Freeze into the river," the fifth year coach explained. At least the windmill didn't fall in. Stckers take two While the big news last weekend in South Bend, Ind. was a football game, the field hockey team was making some noi.,e of its own with wins over Southwest Missouri State and Notre Dame. On Friday Michigan defeated Southwest Missouri State, 2-0. Freshman forward Judy Burinskas added another goal, her third of the year, at 30:48 of the same period on an assist by Nixon. MARYANN Bell and Gillian Pieper combined on the shutout in net, turning back the five shots they faced. It was more of the same on Saturday against Notre Dame. The Wolverines ' offense exploded for five goals and 30 shots on goal while Bell and Pieper again combined for a shutout, the team's fifth of the season. Forward Lisa Murray notched her second goal of the season at $:33 of the first half to start the offensive surge. Nixon struck again at 32:40 to give Michigan a 2-0 halftime lead. NIXON added her third goal of the weekend at 15:15 of the second half. Trisha Mondul and Robin Ives rounded out scoring. "(The Notre Dame game) was the best game we played all season," said head coach Karen Collins. "Although Joan Taylor didn't score, she dictated our offense and set up most of our goals." M=LLER Despite a subpar performance on Saturday, the volleyball team, like the football squad, earned victory. The Wolverines defeated Western Illinois at the Eastern Michigan Classic in five games by scores of 15-5,12-15,15-3, 7-15, and 15-5. Michigan had lost a five-game match to Kentucky on Friday night. "I CAUGHT the last 12 minutes of the Michigan football game, and when I finished coaching our match I felt the same emotions that I felt when I finished listening to the football.game," said first-year head coach Joyce Davis. "I would say it wasn't one of the greatest days in Michigan athletic history, but..." Last season Michigan couldn't win when it played ugly. Against Western Illinois, the Wolverines proved they could. First year players Carla Hunter and Karen Marshall envigorated the squad. Marshall had a team leading 18 kills Friday. The freshman also served for 11 aces on the weekend. Hunter, a sophomore walk-on, stabilized the middle-hitter position. She failed to make the squad a year ago. GRIDDE PICKS Now that the situation is almost resolved, the real story emerges... "So I'm to picl up the package at the corner of Lenin and Trotsky?... Okay. Goodbye." As Daniloff placed the receiver down, a bead of sweat appeared on his brow. "What was this about?" he thought. "A big story perhaps?" It wasn't until about 5 p.m. that the unsuspecting Daniloff was approached. "Thank you," blurted the journalist, taking a box from the dry-looking Soviet. Daniloff moved away from the man and once again took his seat at the park bench. He carefully opened the container. "What in the name of God are these?" he thought to himself, fumbling through the small papers. Suddenly, three armed agents appeared from the bush. Daniloffs arms shot into the air and the box carelessly dropped onto the sidewalk. The first agent picked up the box and carefully studied its contents. "You rrrealize the eemplications of this Meester Daneeloff?" The latter was silent. "Attempting to smuggle Soviet predictions of Griddes picks is a seerious offense. It is indeed too bad, because the First Secretary had such an eempressive winning streak, isn't that right Bilky?" The second agent chuckled. "Vell, it looks like Raisa will no longer be eating that famous Peeeza Bob's no more. Vhat a pity, Meester Daniloff, vhat a pity. Take him away." 1. Oregon State at MICHIGAN (pick total points) 2.
