Page 11 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 15, 1986 Missed fi preserves (Continued from Page 1) thrill, catching a touchdown pass." HARBAUGH'S best crowd- quieter came with less than three minutes left on a third-and-six situation on the Michigan 22-yard line. Michigan was holding a 24- 23 lead and Notre Dame had all the momentum. The coaches Balled for an up-pattern pass to John Kolesar. Cornerback Mary Spence, thinking Michigan would go ahort for the first down, creeped up Within six yards of Kolesar. liarbaugh and Kolesar both saw This and made a check, changing 'he play to an out-pattern. It worked. Kolesar, with his 4.4 speed, 'outran Spence and caught a 38- ,ard bomb to Notre Dame's 40- hard line. The Wolverines aioved 11 more yards on the next :hree plays, but then the offense fade its first major mistake. HARBAUGH gave Bob Ferryman a bad handoff and the :all came loose, falling into Wes OPitchett's hands at the 26. .m "I have to take responsibility for that," Harbaugh said. "I must ;of handed it off to him too high into -is pads, because he never had a mood hold of it. I felt really bad -about it when I was watching on the sidelines. It could have lost the game for us." Indeed, it could have lost the game. QUARTERBACK Steve Beuerlein, a goat under Faust, but a hero under Holtz, led the Irish down to the Michigan 29 in three plays. Then the Wolverine defense held. They stopped Notre Dame at the 28. With 17 seconds left, Carney teed up. He had hit 15 of 16 from that range in his career. Then again, he had hit 46 of 49 extra points, but missed one earlier. With everyone's eyes fixed on him, Carney shanked the ball off to the left. Nobody touched it. It wasn't even close. Michigan fans invaded the south endzone and celebrated while the rest of Notre Dame Stadium went silent. IT WAS Schembechler's Id goal win revenge for 1980, when Notre Dame's Harry Oliver hit a 51- yard field goal with no time left to win 29-27. "I knew he would miss it," Schembechler said. "It was my turn." "I just thank God that we worked hard this summer," Harbaugh said. "I think good luck is a by-product of hard work. I was just glad somebody up there was smiling down on us." The by-product of this win may be a good season for the Wolverines, but the first task will be to correct blaring weaknesses, especially in the defense, which failed to make the Irish punt. "Making corrections is a lot more fun after a win," Schembechler said. And yes, corrections will be made. IRISH CATCH 'M' OFF GUARD Blue defense looks offensive By BARB McQUADE special to the Daily SOUTH BEND - Cap Weinberger would not have been pleased. The Michigan defense, the nation's most efficient in 1985, was picked apart by Notre Dame's offense Saturday in the Wolverines' 24-23 victory over the Fightin' Irish. NOTRE DAME punter Dan Sorensen could have spent the afternoon at the chapel for all his team cared. The Irish went the entire game without a punt. Every drive ended in a scoring play or a turnover. "It isn't that Michigan didn't perform as expected," said Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler. "I think that Notre Dame proved that they're a very good team." Lou Holtz's offense lined up in more formations than the Notre Dame band. It's strategy to keep the Wolverines guessing was plenty effective. "The concept of fullhouse backfield, wishbone, multiple formations is tough to defense if you haven't seen it," Schembechler said. "We did not know they'd throw that much off of (the wishbone) or run the sweep off of it. That was pretty obvious when you saw us defensively." THE IRISH gained 197 yards on the ground and 263 yards passing for a 6.3-yard average. Last year, Michigan allowed 253.6 total yards a game, a 4.0 average. It gave up a total of just 98 points in its 12 games in 1985. Holtz admitted his team's success at moving the ball Saturday came as a surprise. "Michigan is too good on defense," he said. "I thought it would be a very defense-minded game." BUT HOLTZ'S mind was on offense, and he tossed in everything he could think of. "He did a great job with their offense. They mixed it up great," said Wolverine linebacker Andy Moeller. "But we didn't play well. We did not play like a Michigan defense." Notre Dame tailback Mark Green agreed. "I felt the offensive line really controlled Michigan's line," he said. "The guys just did a great job up front." THE WOLVERINE defense had some solid individual performers - namely linebackers Moeller and Todd Schulte and tackle Mark Messner. The unit as a whole, however, has plenty of room for improvement. But the outcome of the game had Schembechler too relieved to be overly concerned. "It's a lot easier and it's a lot more fun to correct mistakes when you win."
