The coaching staff was so desperate that it had to move an incoming freshman running back to wideout. The only "experience" left at the spot was Paul Jokisch, and he had only played football for a year since quitting the basketball team. THIS YEAR the team has the opposite problem. It has so many quality receivers that it might have to move to a three-wideout offense to get the most out of the talent.; The freshman, John Kolesar, turned out to be a gem of a receiver; catching 12 passes for 336 yards., Jokisch, at 6-8, had an expectedly good season hauling in 37 receptions for 681 yards and two touchdowns. With Kolesar and Jokisch back this year, the lineup would appear set, but head coach Bo Schembechler recruited what many believe to be the top high school receiver in the country - Greg McMurtry out of Brockton, Mass. THE ALL-EVERYTHING athlete caught 15 touchdown passes for Brockton HS in '85. He was also a pro baseball prospect and was drafted by his hometown Boston Red Sox (he reportedly turned down a $200,000 signing bonus). Schembechler assigned him the number one, Anthony Carter's number. The veteran coach admitted McMurtry will play, but would not say how much. Despite the freshman's billing, the starters are not worried about losing playing time. "It's going to help us," said Kolesar. "This guy (McMurtry) still has to learn a lot of things like I did last year. I've nevergseen him play, but I'm sure he's going to be a good one." Also in the playing time race is senior Kenny Higgins, the team scholar (4.0 GPA in LSA). The Battle Creek native had a "great spring," according to receiver coach Cam Cameron, and is presently the top backup. 'FROM A position that had nothing year ago, now all of a caller after starting the last seven games in '85. THE RUSHING game will start from scratch with Chris Lane and Erick Montgomery. In '85, the two combined for a meager 257 yards and two touchdowns. The good news on the Beaver defense is eight starters return. The bad news is the defense never gave up less than 20 points in any game last year. The front line has three experienced players back in Gino Mingo, Rich Haggerty; and Phil Alfieri. - NUSSEL September 27 Florida State quarterback Chip Ferguson. In the last nine games of '85, the sophomore hit'70 of 130 passes for 990 yards and 11 touchdowns. In the backfield, Bowden has few worries with freshman redshirt Sammie Smith back after recovering from an ankle injury after the third game. On defense, the Seminoles lost both outside linebackers and a standout lineman, just like -- you guessed it -- Michigan. FSU's other loss came at noseguard and that will be the toughest position to fill. Converted offensive lineman Thomas Harp is next in line, but he has not played a down. -NUSSEL October 4 at Wisconsin Dave McClain, who died suddenly of a heart attack last May. NEW HEAD coach Jim Hilles, McClain's defensive coordinator, has 17 starters back from a team that showed flashes of brilliance in '85. Ten of the 17 are back on defense including inside linebackers Craig Raddatz and Charlie Fawley. -..USSEL Y v s c: October 11 - RESTAURANT FAMOUS FOR OUR HOME-MADE BREAD %" " BEST BREAKFASTS IN TOWN (Try the waffles 1) " SANDWICHES * SALADS * DINNERS " SEAFOOD " CARRY-OUT SERVICE - 668-9538 Corner of Catherine and Glen 1100 E. CATHERINE (short walk from Med. Center) DaiYPhoto by DAN HAE The 6-8 wideout Paul Jokisch has made a complete adjustment from basketball and is now seen as one of the Big Ten's finest receivers. Here, he outreaches Notre Dame's secondary in last year's season opener. IB sudden, we have four or five guys, maybe six, we could play on Saturdays if we had to," said Cameron. The good news, however, ends there. A void was left at tight end after Eric Kattus finished his career. Only sophomore Jeff Brown has any experience at the position and that was just on short yardage situations: He caught one pass all season. "The tight end position is a problem," Schembechler said. "Jeff Brown will start, but we're very concerned about a second or third tight end because I like to have three tight ends," .M First order of checks FREE for new student accounts opened at our two campus locations. The talk out of South Bend since last December has centered on new head coach Lou Holtz, the veteran leader who left Minnesota to take the Notre Dame job after Gerry Faust's departure. However, Fighting Irish followers have said little about the quality of the team's players. They have said even less about the squad's offensive outlook. AND FOR good reason. Holtz inherits an offense without an experienced tailback. The top two contenders to take over for departed All-American Allen Pinkett went down with knee injuries last spring and may not recover. The next prospect is Mark Green, who moved from flanker at the end of the spring. At quarterback, Holtz must resolve the onging battle between Steve Beuerlein and Terry Andrysiak. Both have considerable experience, but neither has stacked up the types of numbers needed to win. --NUSSEL September 20 Oregon State COACH: Dave Kragthorpe (Career Record: 28-280;at Oregon State: 3-8) 1985 RECORD:3-8, 2-6 PAC TEN LAST MEETING VS.
