SPORTS he Michigan Daily Thursday, September 11, 1986 Page 9 Tigers' six homers sink Brewers, 11-7 By BARB McQUADE Detroit -- Home runs were the order of the evening last night at Tiger Stadium -- both inside and out. Mike Heath hit an inside-the- park homer and Kirk Gibson poked one over the roof as the Tigers outpounded the Milwaukee Brewers, 11-7. The two clubs combined for eight homers. Walt Terrell, 12-11, picked up the victory. The Tigers righthander gave up seven runs on eight hits in six innings. Mark Thurmond pitched'the final four innings. Chris Bosio, 0-4, took the loss. The Tigers tagged starter Bill Wegman for seven runs on seven hits and, three of their six home runs. Gibson and Darnell Coles each hit two home runs for Detroit. The Tigers exploded for six runs in the fourth inning on five hits -- four of them home runs. Chet Lemon led 'off the inning with a four-bagger to left. Heath followed with his inside-the-parker, over the head of Robin Yount at the 440-foot mark in straight away center field. Heath's head-first slide easily beat shortstop Earnest Riles' relay to the plate. After Alan Trammell's one- out double, Gibson blasted his second homer of the evening and 24th of the season over the right field roof. Bosio walked Darrell Evans and Coles followed with his second home run, his 18th of the season. The teams exchanged two-run homers in the first inning. Rob Deer clubbed his 33rd to put Milwasukee up 2-0. Gibson countered with a two- run shot off the right field roof in the Tigers first, but it was merely a preview of things to come. Wegman then walked Evans before Coles lifted a shot deep to left. Left fielder Rick Manning snared the ball before it cleared the fence though, robbing the Detroit third-baseman of a home run. Rookie Bruce Fields brought Evans around with a line single to right to put the Tigers up, 3-2. Larkin boosts Reds SAN FRANSISCO (AP) Eric Davis hit three home runs, drove in four runs, and scored five times last night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 14-2 romp over the San Fransisco Giants. Davis, who has 26 homers for the season, added a single in the biggest day of his three-year major-league career. He has hit 11 of his 44 career homers off San Fransisco pitching. Barry Larkin, former Michigan baseball star, also had four hits and Bo Diaz three for the Reds, who totalled a season-high 18 hits off six San Fransisco pitchers as Cincinnati broke a three-game losing streak and held on to second place in the National League West. Mets 6, Expos 1 NEW YORK (AP) . Keith Hernandez and Mookie Wilson hit two-run homers and Ron Darling allowed five hits in eight innings as the New York Mets defeated the Montreal Expos 6-1 last night, lowering their magic number to two. Two Met victories, two Philadelphia losses, or one of each, and the Mets win the National League East.
