Sinopoli opens UMS season By Rebecca Chung Classical music lovers should look forward to an exciting avening tonight. Giuseppi Sino- poli, who will lead the Philharmonia Orchestra in the University Musical Society's opening concert of the season, is perhaps the enfant terrible of conducting. Critics worldwide disagree in their opinion of his talent, which has sparked reactions from "cogently presen- ted and magnificently played" for his Mahler Second to what another critic described as "his maddening way of stretching music on the rack" for his Verdi's Macbeth. One thing is certainly true: Sinopoli is no ordinary conductor (if any conductors are "ordin- ary"). Born in Venice into a decidedly unmusical family, he began his music education at twelve. At seventeen, he entered the Venice music conservatory as an "extracurricular." Upon high school graduation, he also en- rolled in medical school at Padua to console his father. He earned top honors and a license to practice psychiatry (which he has never used), while simultan - eously continuing his music studies. Sinopoli is decidedly uncon- ventional. For example, he told Opera Review that he refuses to conduct Mozart because "I've heard so many bad performances of Mozart that I don't want to hear others under my own baton." He is also an intense intellectual, adding in that same interview that he loves music because "it gives me the possibility of trying to understand human existence." This has caused some to label hm "eccentric" and "vulgar." Nonetheless, his music has wide appeal with at least two of his recordings, his Mahler Second and Schubert "Unfinished"/Men- delssohn "Italian" (both on Deutsche Grammophon) selling well. On the program tonight is the Schubert, as well as Bruckner's Seventh. For tickets, contact the University Musical Society at Burton Tower (764-2538) Giuseppi Sinopoli, a bold new conducting talent, will conduct Schubert and Bruckner tonight at Hill Auditorium.
