Page 10- The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 10, 1986 a M' stickers shut down Toledo, 1-0 Mondul notches Blue goal By ROB LEVINE Off to a quick start thih season, the Michigan field hockey team posted a 1-0 shutout last night over Toledo at Tartan Turf. With the victory; the Wolverines upped its record to 3- 1. GOALIE Maryann Bell had nine saves as she earned her third shutout of the year. With shutouts earlier over Ohio and York University, Bell is looking solid in the nets. Michigan scored the game's only goal on a penalty corner at 27:22 of the first period. Trisha Mondul, with assists by fellow seniors Jane Nixon and Lisa Murray, blew the ball past Rockets' goalie Georgia Meyer. Wolverines Coach Karen Collins was relieved with the final outcome. "We're lucky to come away with a win. It wasn't a pretty game, but we'll take it." FRESHMAN walk-on Meyer, according to Collins, "did an exceptional job , but we didn't take advantage of her." Meyer first picked up a field hockey stick only three weeks ago. Mondul led a strong attack that collected 27 shots on goal. She also performed strongly on defense, shutting down the few scoring opportunities the Michigan squad allowed. "IT WAS my first goal, but we weren't up to par. We're going to have to go hard at practice tomorrow - we know where we screwed up." A lively crowd attended the game, urging on the team. They shouted encouragement at the players, apparently hoping to avoid an overtime period as rain began to fall on Tartan Turf. The squad needs continued support from Bell, Nixon, and Murray, along with solid scoring punch from freshmen Judy Burinskas and Patti Farley to better a team already much, improved from last year. THE SQUAD goes on the road to South Bend, Indiana, on Friday to play Southwest Missouri St. and Notre Dame. Collins saw some bright spots :in the low-scoring, defensive ;slugfest. "I was very pleased to score on a (penalty) corner. We played strong, but we need confidence." 4 Wings sign top pick,4 Ex-Sparta DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings signed Joe Murphy, their top draft pick, to a four-year contract yesterday.
