Page 8- The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 9, 1986 Filling in the. gaps: Moecer expected to lead new Michigan defense against N.D). Rke !%i %r vo m By PHIL NUSSEL Just a year ago, people knew Andy Moeller because his father, Gary, was Michigan's defensive coordinator. Now, after leading the team in tackles last season, Moeller has made a name for himself and is set to lead the Wolverine defense into South Bend to meet Notre Dame Saturday. They will be the first to find out what new head coach Lou Holtz has done with the Irish offense. "I'M THINKING about the game just like every guy on the team," Moeller said. "We're just going to work on all the things that make us a successful football team." Despite Moeller's .accomplish- ments last year, head coach Bo Schembechler expects more from the 6-0, 220-pound senior linebacker in '86 since he must fill the shoes of last year's defensive captain, Mike Mallory. "Andy Moeller will have to take over the responsibilities on defense," Schembechler said. "He is a real asset to the team. He is one of the most widely respected players in the Big Ten." "I'VE GOT TO be this year's Mike Mallory," Moeller said. "If I do that, then I'll be setting the tone. I've got to be able to make plays. "I'm not going to tell you I'm going to carry the defense because that's horse manure. Everybody carries each other." While Moeller wants to copy Mallory's work, he doesn't expect Michigan's defense to copy the 1985 defense, a group many believe was one of the Wolverine's best ever. '" DON'T think, as a team, we can get hung up on trying to match last year's defense," Moeller said. "We're going out to win the Big Ten championship. I hate to say this, but if we give up 500 points and still win the Big Ten, I would be happy. "It's not that we're matching last year, because statisically that's going to be darn near -impossible, but in terms of making the big play - the fumble recoveries, the interceptions - we have the people who can do it." Moeller is the only returning linebacker, but there are six experienced players battling for GROUP THERAPY FOR SEXUALLY ABUSED WOMEN Therapy Group forming at The Counseling Center for women students who had sexual experiences with members of their families or with strangers and who experience continued problems in living. Steve Thibert and Dieter Heren, both starters against Notre Dame last year, are likely to start again this year on the outside. "WE HAVE some holes, but we have the dirt to fill them, as (Iowa head coach) Hayden Fry would say," Moeller added. Unsurprisingly, the Economics and Communication double major patterns himself after Mallory, who is also the son of a Big Ten coach (Indiana's BiT Mallory). The two played side by side at inside linebacker on the '85 defense, which allowed just 98 points. Moeller and Mallory combined for 252 tackles. "I don't want to pat him on the back too much, but I think (Mallory) is"just incredible," Moeller said. "I look at him and say 'There's a guy I want to pattern myself after.' If I wanted to be compared to anyone as a linebacker, it would be Mike Mallory. "I CAN'T think of a bad game the guy ever played." Mallory is now a grad assistant for his father at Indiana E I * U RELAXER SPECIAL * 10% OFF ALL CHEMICAL SERVICES ® Make Your Appointment Today (Offer expires 10-1-86) U Receive A Free 8 oz. He did not have professional size. Moeller sees the same happening to him if he went for the NFL, so he has doubts about trying out. "Oh, I can't play pro football," he said. "It's gotten to the point where it seems like college doesn't mean anything. They hardly look at what you do in college. They go on other stuff, like how good an athlete you are. So I'm not counting on pro football at all." Like his father, and his protege' Mallory, Moeller likes the possibility of going into coaching, but he's been too busy to think about that yet. He has a defense to lead. And if he helps it become a better defense than last year's, people may start remembering defensive coordinator Gary Moeller because he's Andy Moeller's father.
