Field Hockey vs. Toledo 7:30 p.m. Tartan Turf SPORTS Volleyball formerly at now at I.M. games CCRB Building The Michigan Daily Tuesday, September 9, 1986 page 7 1 l stickers to take on By ROB LEVINE With two wins in its first three games, the field hockey team is off to an excellent start. ' The Wolverines opened the season last weekend with shutout victories over Ohio and York University (by scores of 2-0 and 1- 0); losing only to Ball State, 3-2 in overtime. LEADING THE way for the Wolverines was senior Maryann Bell, who had two shutouts in goal. Providing the scoring punch for Michigan was Joan Taylor and Lisa Murray. Coach Karen Collins is pleased with the way the team has played in its first three games. She is "feeling pretty good" about tonight's 7:30 game against Toledo at the Tartan Turf. "Toledo has the potential of beating us," Collins said, "but we're a better team than Toledo." When asked to assess the team's play after the first three games, Collins said she "feels better this year" after they played "under pressure against a physical team in York." TOLEDO HEAD coach Kirpal Singh Mahal had plenty to say regarding his team's chances against Michigan. His squad is 0-4 this season, and Singh Mahal has many reasons for his club's slow start this year. The team consists of only 11 women; seven are freshmen. Toledo's goalie, Georgia Meyer, has only played field hockey three weeks. According to Singh Mahal, the first day, "she didn't stop any ball in practice...I showed the team a tape of the Olympics and the next day she (Meyer) was a different person." Although winless, Toledo has been tough. The Rockets opened with a 3-1 loss to Northwestern, the third ranked team in the country in 1985. Toledo was then thumped by defending Big 10 champ Iowa, 12-0. Against Log Haven of Pennsylvania, the score was a respectable 4-0, considering Log Haven finished 15th in the nation last year. Playing for the third day in a row, a tired Toledo squad lost to Penn State, 3-0. Penn State finished sixth in the nation last season. oledoi Ball State, Michigan's only loss of the year, beat Toledo twice last year by scores of 3-1 and 2-1. Toledo finished last year with a record of 7-12, and again appear to have a rebuilding season this year. Coach Singh Mahal said he is "not sure of his team's chances" against Michigan given the team's "ups and downs."
