Jones, running most effectively behind left tackle Lomas Brown, left guard Chris Dieterich and center Steve Mott, surpassed his previous high of 116 yards set on Oct. 20, 1985. Jones tied a team record with 36 carries. MINNESOTA led 3-0 after one quarter on Chuck Nelson's 35- yard field goal that ended a 55- yard drive highlighted by Tommy Kramer's 34-yard pass to Darrin Nelson. But the Lions then launched a 10-play, 76-yard touchdown drive with Jones picking up 45 yards to take a 7-3 lead with 1:56 left in the -first half. His career long 39-yard cut-back run set up his own two- yard scoring plunge. Eddie Murray added field goals of 33 and 44 yards in the second half as Detroit snapped a seven-game road losing streak. Kramer tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to Jim Gustafson with three seconds to play to close the scoring. The quarterbacks were never much of a factor in the game. Kramer completed 21 of 38 passes for 223 yards; Detroit's Eric Hipple was 8-of-15 for 95 yards. Bears 41, Browns 31 CHICAGO (AP) - Dennis Gentry returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown and Walter Payton rushed for 113 yards and scored twice yesterday, leading the Chicago Bears to a 41- 31 season-opening victory over the Cleveland Browns. The game was marked by the first use of the NFL's new instant replay official when, on the third play from scrimmage, the Browns' Al Gross was credited with a touchdown after a bad snap from center by the Bears bounded into the end zone. THE OFFICIALS on the field did not call a safety or a touchdown until they got word from the replay booth that it was a touchdown. Payton scored on a two-yard run and an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jim McMahon, and Wilber Marshall returned an intercepted pass 58 yards for another Chicago touchdown. But the tenacious Browns defense kept the outcome in doubt until Chicago's Matt Suhey scored on a six-yard run with 2:01 left. KEVIN BUTLER kicked his second field goal of the game, a 19-yarder with 7:55 left in that opened a 10-point lead, but the Browns cut into the lead again on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Bernie Kosar to Brian Brennan with 5:55 to play before the Bears wrappedit up. Cleveland's Kevin Mack scored on runs of three yards in the second quarter and 14 yards in the third quarter, and Matt Bahr kicked a 22-yard field goal in the fourth period. Payton, the National Football League's all-time leading rusher, registered his 74th 100- yard game. He needs one more rushing touchdown to become the. third NFL player with 100 rushing touchdowns. Jim Brown, with 106, and John Riggins, with 104, are the leaders in that category. Broncos 38, RaIders 36 DENVER (AP) - John Elway threw two touchdown passes and caught one from running back Steve Sewell, leading the Denver Broncos to a 38-36 NFL season- opening victory over the Los Angeles Raiders yesterday. Elway's seven-yard pass to running back Gene Lang with 9:49 left proved to be the clincher, giving Denver its first lead since the opening minutes of the game. DENVER capitalized on three critical Raider turnovers in the second half to get back in the game after trailing 19-7. Raiders running back Marcus Allen scored his second touchdown of the game on a 2- yard run early in the third* quarter, putting Los Angeles ahead 29-21. About four minutes later, Allen was stripped of the ball at the Raiders' 12 by Denver linebacker Ken Woodard, who raced in with the fumble recovery for a touchdown that made it 29- 28. Los Angeles countered immediately as Marc Wilson fired his third TD pass of the day, a 57-yarder to Rod Barksdale for a 36-38 advantage. Oilers 31, Packers 3 GREEN BAY (AP) - Warren Moon tossed touchdown passes of 29 and 44 yards and ran three yards for another score yesterday, leading the Houston Oilers to a Detroit Lions' fullback James Jones soars past Minnesota's Chris Martin (57) and Mark Mullaney (77) en route to a second-quirter touchdown. The Houston quarterback completed 14 of 21 passes for 218 yards to complement Mike Rozier's 83 yards rushing on 23 carries. But for the Michigan field hockey team, two wins is twice as many as last year's total. The Wolverines opened their season on Friday with a 2-0 victory over Ohio University. For ar encore, they won a second game yesterday, a 1-0 shutout over York University - quite an accomplishment for a team that has gone 2-27-7 the previous two years. BALL STATE, however, defeated Michigan, 3-2, in overtime. "We are extremely pleased to be 2-1 at this point of the season," said head coach Karen Collins. "The girls have been working very hard and we are just thrilled about the wins." Friday's win came against a team that had started practicing only four days in advance (Michigan has been practicing since August 20). SENIORS Joan Taylor and Lisa Murray, who have both seen more than their fair share of losses, provided the scoring punch needed, while another senior, Maryann Bell, turned away 10 shots. "Friday's game was a good game to start with because it helped us get rid of the opening game jitters," said Collins. Saturday featured a tough loss to the indoor national champions, Ball State, a loss which revealed just how far this team has come. Judy Burinskas, one of fiv4 newcomers, was a bright spot, scoring both Wolverine goals. TO CLOSE the successful weekend, Taylor scored the lone goal in a victory over York University. The win gave the team a big boost of confidence and some much needed preparation for the upcoming Big 10 season. "The Canadian teams are known for their physicalplay. York was a good test for us so early in the season. We were up for a hard fought game and we got one. The girls are improving with each game." Just look at the record.
