0 Page 8-- The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 8, 1986 'Girl in the Picture' captures love at a glance By Scott Sterling The Girl in the Picture is an endearing film about two people who break off their relationship because of mutual boredom, try to :rind happiness elsewhere, then realize that regardless of their misery they're better off together. John Gordon-Sinclair, who layed the pitiably naive lead in Bill Forsythe's Gregory's Girl, plays Alan, a pouty potrait. ;photographer with ambitions $oward avante-garde black-and- ;white photography. Alan's girlfriend Mary, played by Irina $rook, is an art student whose artistic successes introduce a Mint of competition into their Yelationship. The lack of com- munication between them is rendered in simple, yet brilliantly written dialogue by Director Cary Parker, (Mary: "What's wrong?" Alan: "Nothing." Mary: "Is that a nothing-nothing or a something nothing?") Both the dialogue and the actors will make you smirk when you watch The Girl in the Picture. As the movie began, I immediately noticed little smirks surfacing all about me. Even the actors were always smirking. John Gordon- Sinclair unleashed an arsenal of smirks so contagious that you might go the rest of the day with one plastered on your own face. Accompanying the main story of the stalled romance between Alan and Mary are two subplots which might even evoke a few chortles. One of these subplots shows a fiance's hesitation toward eternal commitment. When trying to decrease the expense of engraving his fiance's locket he asks the jeweler ("How much would it be without 'forever'?") The other subplot threatens to steal the show. David McKay, who plays Alan's assistant in the photography lab, Ken, is Spicoli- like hilarious as he constantly falls in love with the girls in the photos he develops. While Alan desperately searches for the right way to tell Mary that it's over, ("I think we both need to maximize our potential as individuals") his assistant Ken desperately longs to go out with one of his "pare-fect garrels" even in the face of staunch rejection,("Since I'm not the last man on earth, I figure I still have a damn good shot at her.") In addition to the simple quality of the writing and the charm of the actors, Director Cary Parker further enriches his film by' capturing the freshness of the Irish locale on camera, exposing both pastoral beauty and modern city-scapes. It is the charm of the actors and the landscape which make The Girl in the Picture refreshing and constantly entertaining. It is the sheer simplicity of the story and the dialogue which render it realistic and meaningful. This is not a film dwelling on* hopelessness and frustrations, rather it celebrates the entirely too common hesitations and illusions one encounters while exploring, how you say,"love"? i 9 ShoN Mic w how you feel with... higan Daily Personals 764-0557 .I THE OFFICE OF MAJOR EVENTS PRESENTS JIM M..YCLIFF THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 POWER CENTER, 8 P.M.
