Tropical islands promise sunny skies, friendly folks, and a lei

By Rebecca Blumenstein
T ROPICAL beaches. Sunny skies
and balmy temperatures. Palm
trees. Friendly people. Although this
may sound like a dream that's a
world away, an increasing number of
people are discovering that the 50th
state of Hawaii offers all of this and
much more.
It's hard to believe that all of the
islands of Hawaii are included within
the boundaries of one state. The

Negril's whi
By Andrew Eriksen
T HE SEVEN miles of white sand
beaches and volcanic cliffs on
Jamaica's west coast offer a spec-
tacular view of the evening sunset
and the perfect setting for a day at the
beach.
The principle resort spot on the
west coast is Negril. It is a quiet town

volcanoes that formed this Pacific
paradise thousands of years ago
created four major islands - Oahu,
Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii (the big
island) - that provide any tourist with
more than enough diversity.
Whether you want to get a piece of
the hustling action in Honolulu on the
famous Wakiki beach or seclude
yourself on the gorgeous Northern
shore of Kauai - the garden island -
you are sure to feel right at home with

some good old American hospitality.
If you can't decide which island to
visit, inter-island airlines will take
you from paradise to paradise for
about $30.
Although the cost of flying to
Hawaii usually is $600 and up from
Detroit through Los Angeles to
Honolulu, you won't find many people
there who complain that the cost isn't
worth it. Moreover, if you hunt for a
good package deal during the off-peak

season, you may find substantial
savings.
Once you're in Hawaii there isn't
much that can spoil your well-
deserved vacation. The people seem
to appreciate the fact that you've paid
to get there and you are expected to
do nothing but enjoy a special com-
bination of the culture of Hawaii and
America. Where else can you be
greeted with a lei of beautiful flowers,
see a genuine luau, experience the
ultimate of surfing, and see Pearl

Harbor?
Hawaii stays at a comfortable tem-
perature of 75-85 degrees for most of
the year, and most of its few clouds
usually clear up by mid-day.
It takes a trip to Hawaii to realize
what a vast and diverse country we
have. I would recommend the ex-
perience to anyone, and don't forget
to bring your Hawaiian Jams and
shirts! In an easygoing atmosphere
such as Hawaii's, almost anything
goes.

ite-sand beaches, sunsets lure chilled vacationers

located away from the larger tourist
cities with their high-rise hotels.
Visiting Negril allows you to in-
teract more with the people who live
and work in Jamaica. It has its own
unique character that is not over-
shadowed by an influx of tourists.
Most visitors arrive at the inter-
national airport in Montego Bay.
Roundtrip airfare from Detroit

ranges from $340 to $559. Negril is
about a two hour drive from Montego
Bay.
Taxis are easy to find and there is a
bus line that runs from Montego Bay
to Negril. But many people visiting
Jamaica save time and money and
rent a motor scooter or a car to get
around.
Negril offers lodging ranging from

small cabins on the beach to exclusive
resort hotels. Prices range from $12
per day for a small cabin to $1,200 per
week for hotel room, airfare, and
meals.
Prices for meals are reasonable ,in
Jamaica. It costs about $2.50 per per-
son for breakfast and about $4 for lun-
ch or dinner.
Negril offers wind surfing,

parasailing, snorkeling, horseback
riding, and an active nightlife.
One of the more famous night spots
in Negril is Rick's Cafe. Rick's is
located high on the volcanic cliffs and
overlooks the azure ocean. Drinking
a cocktail and watching the sunset
from Rick's is a great way to start the
evening. Reggae bands play at one or
more local bars every night.
