ARTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, April 22, 1986 P Lyle Mays brings good cheer to all By Marc S. Taras T HE TEMPTATION is irresistable. I could write "Lyle Loving at Lydia" or "Mays Amazes at the Mendelssohn," but I won't give in to such purple prose. I just did? Rats. You caught me. But the truth is that you didn't catch the keyboard vir- tuoso Mays with his equally adept trio at the Eclipse Jazz presentation at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre in the Michigan League Sunday night, you missed something special. If Mays is a magician (take my word for it), then bassist Marc Johnson is a genie, and his partner in rhythm, drummer Peter Erskine is an elder. Together this trio played a beautiful and diverse set of music that ranged from state of the art fusion to sen- sitive readings of standards and "straight jazz" pieces. Mays perfor- med admirably on a bevy of keyboar- ds: an acoustic piano surrounded by synthesizers that were connected by the MIDI device. The guy is driving the newest models available. Johnson stuck with acoustic bass, however, and his playing was forceful enough to provide great drama in contrast. Er- skine showed how he has continued to grow since his time with Weather Report, deftly moving form brushes and sticks to mallets and electronic drums (while winning over the crowd entirely). Most of the material they perfor- med came from the Lyle Mays album which has been released on ECM and just hit the stores this week. The opening tunes suggested the wide variety of musical textures that the evening could hold. "Slink" from this new LP was carried by the great velocity of Johnson's basswork and embroidered by Mays' multiple voicings. "August" was a beautiful, evocative pastorale. "Teiko," also from the new record, featured the whole range of techno-keys-and- drums in a delicate oriental tapestry. Mays' keyboards painted gentle rain- drops speaking Japanese in a language that everybody understood. Peter Erskine was heard to be swinging hard in a dusted-off Mays piece. called "Fictionary" while John- son's basstalkin' on the same tune was one of the real bright moments. This guy is heroic; a great and thoughful player. But the real top flight ensemble playing came during another of Mays' stunning new pieces, the lovely ballad "Close to Home." This was an extremely lyric piece of gentle beauty and internal strength that brought the stars out and set them twinkling before our eyes. A wonderul show was completed by a great reading of Miles Davis' "Nar-- dis" which led in to Mays' magnum opus, the four part "Alaska Suite." This one had a spotlight feature for everybody and Erskine's mix of acoustic and electronic fricatives was varticularly dramatic. A beautiful encore of Mays' "Waltz for Bill Evans," with its musical nod- dings towards the lyrical pianist for whom it is titled, was as heartwar- ming end to a surprisingly diverse evening of quality music-making. I wonder where these cats will be at when they're fifty! And I hope that this old jazzhead will be there with them, 'cause these guys are on the move! Bravo, Lyle and pals! WHAT A DOWNER. I thought if anyone could pull this one off, it would be director Ridley Scott. Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) has displayed a knack for taking fantastic, other- wordly settings, filming them with a breathtaking visual style, and, mosty importantly, populating them with real, honest-to-God people that we can recognize and identify with. In the case of Legend, Scott cer- tainly has a fantastic world to work with. Legend contains some of the best cinematography this side of Ex- calibur, but without characters we can genuinely care about, this gran- doise attempt at myth-making just doesn't work on an engaging level. Lay part of the blame on Scott's unswerving dedication to his subject matter. He's never been one to smash apart genres - Alien and Blade Run- ner were just transplanted versions of the siege movie and the hardboiled private detective drama, respec- tively- but he always added something new to the old formulas, namely a gritty realism that seemed to mock the rules even as Scott obeyed them. This time around, however, he goes way overboard in observing every cliche that the "sword-and-sorcery" genre has to of- fer. Everything is here: a world plunged into night because the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) has filched one of the last remaining unicorn's horns, an unlikely hero (Tom Cruise) and his unlikely band of elves and leprechauns Good's last chance to triumphover Evil, a fair maiden (Mia Sara) who might end up as Darkness's bride if her prince doesn't come real fast. To these magic ingredients Scott adds zero freshness and zero insight, just a bold visual interpretation that, while beautiful, often borders on ex- cess. Of course, it was probably never Scott's intention to add anything new to the formula, and in interpreting a straightforward fairy tale for the big screen, he's done an admirable job. But, hey, all I know is what I see, and what I saw was not a great flick. It did have its moments, though. No matter how lame Legend may have been from a narrative standpoint, one can't deny the power of it's imagery. Scott has created a visually im- pressive, if strangely claustrophobic world - though whoever it was who decided to put Spark-o-Glitter on the protagonists faces and have Lawren- ce Welk soap bubbles floating around the set for no apparent reason should be slapped upside the head. Some of the action sequences were great, especially the final duel between Jack (Cruise) and the Lord of Darkness. All in all, though, Legend sinks un- der it's own pretentiousness, which is really a downer. If some of the atten- tion and imaginaton that went into the visuals had been funneled into plot and characters, this could have made a great matinee.
