Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, January 16, 1986 Inmates take tbree workers hostage in Ypsilanti security facility YPSILANTI (UPI) - Three in- mates took two guards and a kitchen worker hostage at knifepoint yester- day in the food services building at the maximum-security Huron Valley Men's Facility, officials said. Officials said the prison was placed under "full alert" while a special State Police negotiating team attem- pted to secure the release of the three hostages. There were no reports of in- juries. SOME 360 inmates were placed un- der lockdown, and officials said they were confident the rest of the prison was secure. The neighboring Huron Valley Women's Facility was placed on "standby" alert, a spokeswoman there said. - It was the second serious incident at the southeast Michigan prison in eight days. On Jan. 7, a rookie female guard was held hostage for more than 10 hours by an inmate with a homemade knife. She escaped unharmed after a state trooper rushed the inmate's cell. Corrections Department spokesman Robert Mills in Lansing identified the hostages as food service worker John Saron, 51, of Ypsilanti, and guards Ronald Desbrough, 48, of Saline, and Dennis Easley, 28, of Yp- silanti. THE INMATES, all from Detroit, were identified as Elvis Williams, 31, Namon Travis, 40, and Darwin Gravitt, 36. Williams is serving two sentences for armed robbery; Gravitt for three assaults, including two against corrections employees, and Travis for armed robbery and criminal sexual conduct. Mills said Williams and Travis, who were being transferred to Southern Michigan Prison at Jackson, broke from their guards during the transfer process and ran into the food services building around 10:30 a.m. EST. Inside the building, they were joined by Gravitt. They took the three men hostage and demanded keys to the basement of the building, although Mills said the reason for the demand was not immediately clear. "The latest word I have is that it is assumed all three (inmates) are equally involved at this point," Mills said. Travis' sister, Eloise Jackson, said her brother phoned her three times Tuesday saying he feared for his life because of the upcoming transfer to Jackson. She said Travis had problems with a guard and another inmate during an earlier stint at Jackson. III -.s .II) f-5 :74 0 714u4jjj v FOR SALE FOR RENT FOR RENT WINTER TERM.
