In the four games that were played on Friday and Saturday, Morrow ac- companied the following: three com- plete games, two wins, two shutouts, and one no-hitter. Morrow's two shutouts enabled the Wolverines to split their four-game series with Minnesota. She silenced the Gophers 3-0 on four hits in Friday's first game, and then topped herself in Saturday's opener by tossing a 3-0 no-hitter. Michigan coach Carol Hutchins called on Morrow to do it one more time in Saturday's nightcap but Morrow was unable to pitch the shutout needed for the win. Her team- mates offered no offensive support as Minnesota won 4-0 to nail down the split. Minnesota had previously beaten the Wolverines 3-2 in Friday's finale. The loss in the last game did nothing to tarnish Morrow's sterling perfor- mance. The no-hitter was her fourth of the year, second in Big Ten play. She raised her record to 11-6 while lowering her ERA to 0.55, 0.88 in the Big Ten. "Vicki is pitching the best ball of her life," said Hutchins, "I think that she is the best pitcher in the Big Ten right now." Considering that the Big Ten has two of the best pitchers in the country (Northwestern's Lisa Ishikawa and Indiana's Amy Unter- brink) that is no small compliment. Her no-hitter began with Min- nesota's Judy Oliverius matching her goose egg for goose egg for the first five innings. Martha Rogers led off the home fifth with a base hit to end Oliverius' no-hit bid, but Michigan was unable to score until the sixth. Morrow led off the sixth frame with a base hit and advanced to second on an error. Oliverius then walked the next two batters, setting the stage for Mary Ann Daviera. Daviera, a fresh- man, came through with a single that produced two runs. Rogers then followed with a run producing single of her own to round out the scoring at 3-0. All that remained was the suspense surrounding Morrow. A one-out error by Daviera added the chance for a perfect game, but Morow remained in control and struck out Barb Drake to end the game. At that point, Hutchins decided to gamble and named Morrow as her pitcher for the next game. "She was hot and we needed another win. We had to try and keep it going," said Hutchins. The gamble did not pay off. Morrow was unable to keep the Gophers off the board even for one inning. Drake avenged her game-ending whiff by MUSICAL Student editing and typing $1.50/page 996-0566 ONE PAIR Fried-Beta Speakers for sale. Minnesota padded their lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Kathy Casull and Ann Flis drove in runs with a single and sacrifice fly, respectively. "I think we finally caught on to Vicki after seeing her so many times," said Gopher coach Linda Wells of her team's 4-0 win. The loss left Morrow ambivalent about the day. "Pitching a no-hitter is still a very big deal to me, but pitching and losing game four takes something away from it." But whatever Morrow felt was taken away by the loss was more than returned by her previous whitewashing of Minnesota on Friday. In that outing, she scattered four hits and struck out nine over the seven-inning game. Her teammates scored two runs in split the weekend series with the the fourth, taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch. Nan Payne drove in the third run in the fifth,-. scoring Rogers with a single. In the game of Friday's twinball, Michigan outhit their opponents six to five, but committed two costly errors in sixth that contributed to two Gopher runs. Julie Clark gave up only one earned run but was saddled with the 3-2 loss. The split left Michigan with a 21-13 record, 6-8 in the conference. Min nesota is now 16-16, 8-4. Catcher Kim Katzenmeyer summed up the. Gophers feeling, "We wanted to split ' on the road and we did it." For the Wolverines, who travel to Detroit to play the Titans today, their goal is to finish third in the Big Ten-; this year. "We set a goal and we're going to shoot for it. I think it's realistic," said Hutchins. It also gave the Celtics a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series. Boston can win it in Chicago tomorrow night. Jordan, who had 49 points in Thur- sday night's opening loss, broke the record of 61 points set by Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers in Boston on April 14, 1962. The overtime record was 50 points by Boston's Bob Cousy in a four-overtime game on March 21, 1953. Jordan, who missed 64 regular- season games with a broken bone in his left foot, sent the game into over- time by hitting two free throws with no time remaining in regulation to make the score 116-116. With three seconds left in the first overtime, his 15-foot shot from the left was too far, leaving the score tied 125-125 going into the second extra session. With Chicago trailing 133-131, Jor- dan had a chance to tie the game, but he missed a jumper from the foul line with 30 seconds to play. Boston had built that lead on four long baskets. Larry Bird, who led Boston with 36 points, hit on from the foul line with 3:56 to go, but Orlando Woolridge hanL- ehn fnr. hiran tinA the onmP Game 1, appeared to be on the verge of a 2-0 deficit, trailing by seven mid- way in the fourth quarter.
