The hub of our campus is home to preachers, hash bashers, hackey sackers, people in- terested in revolutionary politics, twisters, guitar players, bucket drivers, Gargoyle pitchers, cox- swains, pilots, skateboarders, protestors, high school kids who think they're really cool, high school kids who aren't cool at all, drug dealers, chess players, car smashers, politicians, religious fanatics, and this guy named Ed. Go out and introduce yourself. I BEST LOCAL BAND Domino A lot of bands got a lot of votes, but thid Motor City import still managed to edge its competitors for the second straight year. Honorable mention goes to the University of Michigan Marching Band, which is still looking for a bar to play'in. BEST DORMITORY East Quad Externally, East Quad is Univer- sity catalogue material. The Ivy- colored brick walls are the stuff college is made of. Internally, the Quad houses a diverse assortment of people who are among the Univer- sity's most active. East Quad is home to the Abeng Minority Cultural and Arts Festival, the Women's Weekend, the RC Players, the Brecht Company, and Open Mike at the Halfway Inn, to name just a few of the things that go on withing East Quad's corners. Who was Goldberg's coach back at home? It was Rick Sharton, Jim's older brother. Runners Up: Glen Rice, basketball; Doug Wyland, wrestling; Jim Abbott, baseball; John Kolesar, football; Todd Brost, hockey; and Candace Quinn, swimming. BEST COMEBACK Jim Harbaugh The son of former Michigan assistant Jack Harbaugh not only recovered from a broken left arm, he took over the Michigan single-season passing recordbook in three categories en route to becoming the nation's most efficient quarterback in 1985. Runners Up: The football team. After a devastating 6-6 campaign in '84, the Wolverines put together a 10-1- 1 mark complete with a victory over Nebraska in the Sunkist-Fiesta Bowl. BEST HITTER Andrea Williams The senior volleyball standout was the Wolverine's most proficient spiker in '85 with a .290 hitting percentage. Williams led the team with 403 assists, 399 digs and 376 kills - 10 in the Big Ten. WORST CASE OF SCHIZOPHRENIA The Hockey Team Despite splitting regular-season series with soon-to-be NCAA national champion Michigan State, and two- game series with both defending national champion RPI and then number-one ranked Bowling Green, the hockey team managed to lose season series to the likes of Ferris State and Illinois-Chicago, and were swept by Ohio State and Lake Superior. WORSTbWEEKEND October 18-19 On the same weekend the football team lost to Iowa, Ferris Stateswept the icers, 7-6 and 10-5. It was so bad that the press found coach Red Beren- son sitting on a bench in an adjacent pitch dark ice rink. BEST HOCKEY PLAY Mike Rossi The thriller of the year came when freshman walk-on goalie Mike Rossi stopped former high school team- mate Neil Hernberg on a breakaway and then Michigan came down the ice and scored when fellow freshman Jeff Urban tipped in a shot from Myles O'Connor to give the Wolverines an 11- 10 victory over RPI. BEST FIGHT Mike Rossi vs. UIC Rossi comes away with this award when he got into a full-scale melee in his homecoming appearance at Illinois-Chicago. Jeff Urban also participated as he was third man in. BEST SIGN OF CHANGING TIMES Alex Roberts The in-coming recruit from Detroit will play his hockey in Ann Arbor, despite his father and uncle having great careers at Michigan State.
