BEST ARTS BEST BUSINESSES THINK FIRST TO FABER TRAVEL THEN TO EUROPE .. .o eebprice BEST MUSIC BEST POP/ROCK/ WHATEVER Either time (November or March), Robyn Hitchcock's weird but brilliant Blind Pig performances were a unique experience which left Ann Ar- bor-ites blown away by the former Soft Boy. DON'T miss Hitchcock when he comes back to town this Fall. Also noteworthy: Santa Cruz artists Camper Van Beethoven merged punk, country, folk, and hard rock (remem- ber the '70s?) in a highly appreciated and thrilling gig this past March. And Alex Chilton satisfied many of his (cultish) fans'sexpectations with his much-awaited performance on April 1. BEST JAZZ/BLUES Solar Sun Ra and his outer space Arkestra descended on Lydia Men- delssohn Theater for a truly inspired and exciting two hour performance this January. With a repertoire ranging from dissonant free group recitations to red hot swing standar- ds, the troupe dazzled the initiated and uninitiated alike. The Dutch ensemble, The Willem Breuker Kollektief was outrageous when they played the scene last Oc- tober at Mendelssohn as part of their government-sponsored North American tour. And - Buddy Guy was possibly one of the most pleasant surprises of the year when he set fire to Rick's American Cafe last month. BEST FOLK Ann Arbor was treated to a slew of talented folk (or something resem- bling that classification) artists in '85- 86: Reunited after almost two decades, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem brought together all the aspects (last November) that made them one of the '60s premiere folk ac- ts, with all the advantages of age, and none of its ills. Also: David Bromberg's Big Band deserves acclaim for their show at the Ark that same month, John Prine gave an energetic and personal per- formance at the Power Center, and the trio Uncle Bonsai thrilled their Ark audience with an auspicious and off-beat Ann Arbor debut. Last but not least: While headliner Arlo Guthrie may have been.merely extraordinary, Doc Watson provided the Ninth Annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival with its most memorable moment by announcing, "I'm gonna. ruin my reputation," as he embarked on a set of '50s rock classics, in- cluding "Treat Me Like a Fool," and "Blue Suede Shoes." BEST CLASSICAL One of the greLtest -rprises of this season was the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's February performance with Gunther Herbig - which established them as one of America's greatest orchestras. Jessye Norman's January perfor- mance at Hill Auditorium was well received with six encores; conclusive proof that the University graduate is a shining star in the world of opera. BEST FILM Prizzi's Honor - Directed by John Huston, this is one of the funniest black comedies in a long time. Jack Nicholson is a Brooklyn mafia hit man who falls head over heels for Kathleen Turner. A bored housewife? No, Tur- ner is a "hit person" as well. They might have lived happily ever after, if they hadn't been hired to kill each other. Everything is great in this movie but especially the fantastic performance by Anjelica Huston. Brazil - This movie may be a little bit weird, but the imagination and energy makes up for it. One lesson is learned here: never fall in love with a totalitarian state. Jonathan Price gives a good performance but Katherine Helmond steals the scene every time. Terry Gilliam's directing and the awesome effects make this movie breathtaking. Back To the Future - Adolescent aimed, yes, but a fine piece of film, nonetheless. An Oedipus complex to the max. Michael J. Fox goes back to the '50s and ends up trying to get his mom and dad together. If he doesn't, he won't be born. A helluva good time. The Trip to Bountiful - The plot and script aren't great but what ac- ting jobs from Geraldine Page and Rebecca DeMornay! It deals with an old woman who wants to get back to her home town before she dies. Truly touching. Kiss of the Spider Woman - William Hurt gives the performance of his career as a homosexual hair- Corner of Liberty and Maynard 769-90 1 1 The Ann Arbor Cantata Singers Bradley Bloom, Director BEST WOMEN'S CLOTHING STORE The Bivouac and Jacobson's The Bivouac is on the cutting edge, jumping onto the latest fashion trends with enthusiasm and certainty. Jacobson's is rooted in tradition, but that doesn't mean they're stodgy. Besides, Jake's is the place where you can pick up Godiva chocolates as well as clothing. We recommend checking both, and arriving at a happy medium. BEST MEN'S CLOTHING STORE The Bivouac A lot of women voted in this category, so guys who care what women think should take a cue. The Bivouac has the hot looks for summer. BEST HAIRDRESSER Shear Impact It was a close shave, but Shear Im- pact edged Dillon's. The two conten- ders topped competitors that included "Mom," "Karen," and "Heidi," among others. Shear Impact and Dillon's were neck and neck as we finished counting the ballots, but Shear Impact won(sorry!) by a hair. BEST JEWELRY STORE Schlanderer & Sons With two Ann Arbor locations, Schlanderer captures both the South University and the Main Street shop- pers. Their collection of bowling shirts, shades, uniforms, jewelry, and just flat out cool stuff, provides something for just about every stripe of retro- chic clothes shopper. BEST DRUGSTORE Richardson's Richardson's allows you to send a telegram as you shop for toiletries. The Western Union office in the back is just one of the many attractions at this pharmaceutical funhouse. BEST RECORD STORE Schoolkids' The Schoolkids are all right. At least that's what the voters think, as the 'kids romped to an easy victory in this category. Besides having an out- standing selection of cutouts and im- ports, they also do a great job with regular vinyl. frightening (hermaphrodite Princess Tinymeat's LP, in the "Disgusting" section) Wazoo is the choice of the budget and quality conscious used- record buyer. Fantastic selection in a convenient (if cramped) location make Wazoo the winner. BEST GIFTS Middle Earth Single votes went to checks, Grobots, and free sex. While these are all nice, they just can't compare with the colossal and varied selection of gifts at Middle Earth, home of the most extensive collection of Godzilla toys this side of Toho. One purist voted for "love and truth." We wish him luck. He probably has a closetful of Grobots.
