The women's tennis team has definitely formed a losing one against Michigan State. The Spartans beat the Wolveri- nes yesterday for the fourth time this season, this time with an 8-1 drubbing. Michigan's one win came at the third singles spot as Erin Ashare, returning from a shoulder injury, beat' MSU's Mari Maralonso in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. "It was a good win for Erin," Michigan's head coach Bit- sy Ritt said. "I think this is the highest she's played all year." ANOTHER Wolverine who played well, but with a less fortunate out- come, was Paula Reichert at first singles. She handily took the first set from Linda Pursel, 6-3, and almost won the match in the second. Reichert was down 5-2 in the second set when she rallied to win four straight games, bringing the score to; 6-4. She then double-faulted to tie the match and during the tie-breaker double-faulted three more times. Reichert lost the set, 7-6, and went on to lose the third set, 6-3. "Paulta told me after the match that she got uptight after double- faulting the first time," said Ritt. "Once you do it once, especially on big points, it's easy to lose confidence." RITT'S confidence for Michigan's upcoming matches might be a little shaken since Tina Basle reinjured her pulled hamstring. Basle was playing in the second set of the second doubles match when she strained the muscle. "I'm really concerned about Tina," Ritt said. "She had had a good week at practice and was getting stronger. We hoped that she would be playing both singles and doubles by next weekend." Unfortunately for Basle and her partner Leslie Mackey, the injury oc- curred when they could still have won the match against Pursel and Nancy Redmon. Basle and Mackey won the first set 6-2, and were on their way to winning the second but Basle could not play in pain, and was unable to finish. Basle and Mackey lost the second set, 7-5, and defaulted during the third while behind, 3-0. None of the other Wolverines lasted more than two sets, but Ritt said she will not look back on the match. "We are stronger than an 8-1 loss to MSU shows. We are already looking for- ward to this weekend's matches with Illinois and Purdue." By ADAM OCHLIS Frank Downing capped off a "rewarding" year yesterday when the 1985-86 Michigan hockey cap- tain received second team academic All-America honors by the College Hockey Statistics Bureau. "It's fantastic," said Downing, who carries a 3.43 grade point average in the business school. "I've always dreamed about being an academic All-American. I've put a lot of hard work into school as well as hockey and I'm glad that it has been so rewarding. I really can't believe it." DOWNING was just as im- pressive on the ice as he was in the classroom. The senior from Or- chard Park, N.Y. scored 20 goals this past season for the Wolverines, bettering by one his goal total during his first three years. He scored his 20th goal, most fittingly, in his last game in a Michigan uniform against Michigan State. "I'm really pleased that Frank's getting the national recognition that he deserves," said coach Red Downing ...academic All-American Berenson. "He's paid the price to do well in a very competitive business school, and he's also come up with his best season as a hockey player." Downing, who plans to go into business with his father in Buffalo, was the only unanimous selection for the CCHA All-Academic team. He was also named to the same team as a junior. KC nips "Red Sox, '1-0 BOSTON (AP) - Steve Balboni belted a long homer and Bret Saberhagen allowed only two hits yesterday as the Kansas City Royals posted their fourth victory in a row .with a 1-0 decision over the Boston Red Sox. Balboni's second home run of the season leading off the second inning off Boston's Al Nipper was all Saberhagen needed for his first vic- tory of the season. THE 1986 American League Cy Young Award winner and the World Series MVP allowed only singles by Tony Armas with two out in the second and by Don Baylor leading off the fifth. Neither Armas nor Baylor advanced beyond first. The only other Boston runner was Wade Boggs, who walked and was erased as Jim Rice grounded into his third double play in eighth games in the fourth. Saberhagen, who turned 22 last Friday, lasted less than six innings in his 1986 debut against the New York Yankees last week after losing time in spring training with a sore shoulder and a virus. He was not involved in the New York decision. - Saberhagen struck out five and walked just one in outdueling Nipper, -1, who went the distance. The Boston right-hander allowed only five hits, struck out one and walked four. Twins drop Asi th 8.inning MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Gary Gaetti hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning off Oakland reliever Keith Atherton yesterday, lifting the Min- nesota Twins to a 7-5 victory over the A's.
