ARTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, April 16, 1986 Page 7 --- - ----------- 0 La La, By Sue Cahill I F YOU were not at the late show last Friday, you missed a semi-private screening of an amm1ino new release, La Cage aux Folles III: The Wedding. No more than twenty people followed the usher's directions all the way down the back hallway to the last theater on the right. Granted, the film is French with subtitles-strike one to the average viewer; it is a sequel to a sequel - strike two; and it explores the relationship of a middle-aged homosexual couple. Strike three? Director George Lautner is not out to attract the typical American audience's attention, though he proves once again that the dilemmas of a gay couple, flawlessly played by Michel Serrault and Ugo Tognazzi, can be just as engaging, if not more so, as the problems of any straight couple on the screen. The film opens with Albin, (Tognazzi), leaving St. Tropez for Scotland and the reading of his late Aunt Emma's Will. Uncomfortably dressed in a man's black suit, he cuts a comic figure, shuffling and pran- cing through the airport, complaining to Rinato, (Serrault), that he "can't walk in flat shoes!" As usual, he makes a constant spectacle of him- self, sporting. countless pastel en- sembles, trendy enough to make any women jealous. 'La Cage' A Waving like the Queen of England, Clever he deplanes in Scotland to discover move th just how large an estate he has conveni inherited. Yet Albin falls faint off his matrim chair when he learns that he can only Pergola keep his new title of "Duke", cinemat ("Duchess", he corrects the lawyer), amusing if he gets married and fathers a child the san within eighteen months. Otherwise, predeces he will lose everything to his Obviou Christopher-Reeve-lool-alike cousin, not for e Woodson, (Michel Galabru). Albin, recomm completely flustered, catches the a corned next flight home. good fai The search for a practical solution leads Albin and Rinato through a complicated series of circumstances, including a dating service, a courting lesson, and a suicide attempt, all of which fail hilariously. Throw in a beautiful girl, (Stephane Audran), pregnant, and recently jilted by her boyfriend, a nightclub act featuring Albin as a Queen Bee, (the costume alone is worth the price of admission), a flut- tery black housemaid named Jacob, and plenty of role reversals, especially when Rinato feigns an in- terest in women. The result is an en- dearingly droll twist on the feminine temperment. Trois writing and insightful acting e plot swiftly through a few ent coincidences to its onial climax. And Monsieur 's subdued, stylized tography enhances this piece of cinematic folly with me warmth of its two ssors. usly, La Cage aux Folles III is veryone, but it comes highly ended to those of us who love dy and who can still enjoy a ry tale.
