CMtc The Michigan Daily Friday, April 11, 1986 Red Sox cool off Tigers Page 7 By DAVE ARETHA Special to the Daily DETROIT - No come-from-behind fun this time. After opening the season with a pair of gutsy, 6-5 wins, the Detroit Tigers were shut down cold by the Boston Red Sox yesterday, 4-2. With temperatures in the 30s and flurries in the air, Boston starter Al Nipper numbed the Tigers' bats, allowing just four hits in eight and two-thirds innings. Only a couple of cheap singles and some frozen Red Sox' fingers allowed Detroit to score any runs at all. THE RED SOX themselves mustered just two singles in the first four and two-thirds innings. But with two outs and the bases empty in the fifth, Boston smacked pitcher Dan Petry silly, scoring all four of its runs to take a 4-1 lead. Fill-in shortstop Ed Romero started the rally with a sharp double past third base. Dwight Evans singled him home, and after a walk to Wade Boggs, Bill Buckner drove in Evans with a double to right. Jim Rice continued the assualt with a two-run single to center before Petry and reliever Chuck Cary silen- ced the Sox the rest of the way. UNLIKE THEIR first two games, the Tigers had no heroes yesterday. After combining for four home runs and ten RBIs Monday and Wed- nesday, Kirk Gibson and Darrell Evans were hitless in seven at-bats. The Tigers squeaked out runs in both the second and seventh innings. In the second, a single and two walks loaded the bases for Detroit. With two outs, shortstop Doug Baker, replacing a sore-armed Alan Trammell, slap- ped what seemed like a harmless gounder to first baseman Buckner. Buckner fielded the ball cleanly but let it squirt out of his glove as he ran to MUSICAL COMPLETE Yamaha Stereo System. The rest of the Tigers didn't fare much better, as the Red Sox handed them their first loss of the season, 4-2, yesterday at Tiger stadium. first. One run scored on the play, but Darnell Coles was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second. A pair of groundball singles led to Detroit's other run in the seventh. Af- ter Coles beat out a slow roller to second, Chet Lemon chopped a single through the left side. A walk to pinch- hitter Harry Spilman and a Dave Collins bounce-out to Buckner brought in the Tigers' final run. A one-out error by Buckner and a two-out walk by Nipper gave Detroit a chance in the ninth. But reliever Joe Sambito saved the game by getting Larry Herndon to bounce to the mound. After a 6-0 start last year, and a 9-0 beginning in 1984, the 2-1 Tigers head into Cleveland today for a 4:05 game with the Indians. SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Berra 's squeeze lifts. NY, 6-5 NEW YORK (AP) - Pinch-hitter Dale Berra's bases-loaded suicide squeeze bunt-single with one out in the 10th inning scored Mike Easler as the New York Yankees rallied from an early five-run deficit and defeated the Kansas City Royals, 6-5 yester- day. The winner was Dave Righetti, who came in after Frank White had led off the top of the 10th against Rod Scurry with a double. The Royals attempted a suicide squeeze but Lynn Jones missed the ball and Wynegar, the cat- cher, chased White toward third and tagged him out. The Yankees sent it into extra in- nings with a ninth-inning run as pinch- hitter Ron Hassey singled with one out, Willie Randolph walked with two away and Don Mattingly singled to center. The Royals scored two runs in the first inning and three in the fifth to chase Joe Niekro and give Bret Saberhagen a five-run cushion. But the 1985 Cy Young Award winner and World Series Most Valuable Player didn't survive the sixth inning. Brewers 8, White Sox 5 CHICAGO (AP) - Ernest Riles hit an opposite field-home run to climax a four-run, ninth-inning comeback yesterday as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated Chicago, 8-5, to complete a three-game, season-opening series sweep of the White Sox. With one out in the ninth, Mike Felder singled off Bob James, Chicago's fourth pitcher, and Robin Yount followed with his third hit of the game. James struck out Paul Molitor, but Brewers' rookie Billie Joe Robidoux tied it 5-5 with a single and Riles hit his second homer of the season, into the left-field seats. When James hit the next Milwaukee batter, Rob Deer, with his next pitch, Deer appeared ready to charge the mound. Players from both benches streamed onto the field, but home plate umpire John Shulock quickly grabbed Deer. No punches were thrown by any players. A's 3, Twins 0 OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Moose Haas pitched six-hit, shutout ball for seven and two-thirds innings and rookie Jose Canseco hit a two-run homer to lead the Oakland A's past the Minnesota Twins, 3-0, yesterday. The A's, winning their first game of the season, scratched out their first run with the help of Dave Kingman's bunt single in the fourth inning. Can- seco's homer in the seventh was the team's first of the year. Haas, acquired from Milwaukee, walked one batter and struck out five in his first game with the A's. He left after Kent Hrbek doubled in the eighth and Jay Howell saved his win. The A's had four hits through six in- nings off John Butcher. But Carney Lansford doubled to open the seventh and Canseco, who hit five homers last year in an impressive September with the A's, followed with his homer over the center-field fence. - Cardinals 4, Cubs 2 ST. LOUIS (AP) - Ozzie Smith singled home two runs to break a four- th-inning tie and Rick Ownbey earned his first major-league win in almost three years, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory yesterday over the Chicago Cubs. Ownbey struck out two and walked four before leaving the game two bat- ters into the seventh inning. Todd Worrell saved Ownbey's first victory in a St. Louis uniform. Ownbey's last big-league win came on June 10, 1983, as a reliever for the Mets. Smith's hit was one of four St. Louis singles in the game. Jack Clark opened the fourth against loser Den- nis Eckersley with a single to left and Andy Van Slyke walked. After Terry Pendleton sacrificed and Mike Heath was hit by a pitch, Smith broke a 1-1 tie with his hit into center field.
