England's Cocteau Twins do this, crafting an original brand of rock whose obsessive sound is as hard to figure out as it is breathtaking to hear. It is expansive and otherworldly, teeming with ethereal atmosphere without ob- scuring the band's gift for shaping dramatic melodies. Beneath it all lies an elusive and mysterious element which is the lifeblood of their music. The Pink Opaque, the Cocteaus' first American release, is a com- pilation album of songs spanning the group's four-year career, ranging from their debut album, Garlands, on through 1984's universally ac- claimed Treasure, and up to singles released early last year. Like any album of its kind, its suffers from in- coherence as a volume of tunes, but its diversity illustrates the colourful styles one finds in their albums and numerous 12-inch singles. The sound of he Cocteau Twins is decidedly that of rock, as the furious guitar and crashing percussion of "Musette and Drums" will attest. It's just that their attitude seems to own as much to the spirit of religious hymns as to the tradition of the Rolling Stones. If the Stones make great party music, then the Cocteau Twins make a brand of rock designed for play in cathedrals. The magical element which defines their work is a certain rush of liquid melody that gives rise to the rich atmosphere; the deliberate pacing of tempo makes for imagery that suggests viewing quicksilver in slow-motion. A pulsating drone of bass flows over top of a steely, eecr tronic drumbeat. Weaving in an out come guitar lines of crystalline rise- and-fall and squalls of grinding power-chords. Above it all floats the martial sweep of Elizabeth Fraser's" vocals. Fraser (voted by readers of Britain's New Musical Express as 1984's best female vocalist) sings in a style which merges the sinister wail of The Banshees' Siouxsie Sioux with the glory of an operatic diva. If you look for plain messages in her vocal procession you'llvonly rob yourself blind; the real value, lies in its impressionistic quality. She rattles off chantlike choruses, injects a few obscured bits of English, warbles in Latin-sounding arpeggios, softly coos, and tosses it all about in a painterly fashion. Upon hearing the phrases of "From, the Flagstones" you might think, well, here's some "real" lyrics (a.k.a. actual words). Then comes "Lorelei," though, where Fraser's singing substantially reshapes the adjacent instruments; a guitar line reminiscent of a police-car siren takes on an upbeat, strident feel along side her glowing vocals, Trying to get a grip on it all, you will realize that the Cocteau Twins are living in their own little world, far away from the contours of main- stream rock. Despite its inconsistency, this record is a wonderful view into the Cocteau's world, and proof of how indispensable a band they are. - Michael Fischer 761-TYPE Michigan Union 769-COPY cJtc CIBACHROME COLOR STATB " Color Transparancies " Pearl or Glossy Paper * No Negatives Required " Flat Art or from Slides 4R Nt)LY9 P ,Smr /971 GREAT COPY copyid 110 E.
