Keaton speaks about new film, old part

By Seth Flicker
Michael Keaton is a funny man. Af-
ter doing many sitcoms, Keaton went
on to do the comedies Night Shift and
the title roles in Mr. Mom and Johnny
Dangerously.
Currently, Keaton is starring in
Ron Howard's new film Gung Ho.
Keaton plays the middle man who has
to join the Japanese and American
cultures together in order to save an
auto company as well as his Pen-
nsylvania town.
"It was a lot of work to play the
character," said Keaton. "He has a
whole lot of levels to play. In a lot of
ways, it was the hardest part to play
because he is all things to all people.
He has to twist and turn and bob and
weave; do real quick switches right

away. I knew when I was going to
play him, he was going to be a cross
between Billy Blaze Night Shift) and
Mr. Mom. Somewhere in there was
me. I try to always do a distinct and
different character. In reality, this is
not different from other things that I
have done. I knew that when I saw the
script. Maybe it does look like some
other things that I've done before, but
I thought that I still wanted to play
this."
Gung Ho is the second time that
Keaton has worked with Howard. The
first was in Night Shift.
"When I did Night Shift, even my
audition was off the script a lot. But
he obviously liked what he saw
because he hired me. Ronny gave me

a lot of room not only to improvise but
to make suggestions or ask questions.
For the first really big shot for a
studio, that was kind of risky on his
part, but it was paying off."
"What's great is he won't let you go*
nuts for no reason," continued
Keaton. "If you're going nuts for a
reason, that's O.K., but if it's not
motivated or just so I get to do what I
want to do, it's kind of worthless. He
knows how to pull the reigns in. We
have that experience and the movie
works pretty well. What it comes
down to alot of trust was built up
so when I make a suggestion or
disagree with something, he knows
that I'm not disagreeing with it just to
disagree ... He won't let you do
everything, but I like that when

somebody says, 'No, wrong, don't do
it. You're just dead wrong.' I don't
even have to agree with the fact that
he says I'm wrong but I respect it."
Hunt Stevenson, Keaton's role in
Gung Ho is a tricky part to play.
Though it is mostly a comedic part,
many serious points come out in the
heat of anger. There is a lot of
aggression between the Americans
and the Japanese so when one plays a
part such as Keaton's, you have to be
very careful not to make it sound so
racist that it may distract a viewer.
"The real attraction to the role was
that he has faults. The character is
only interesting to play if they have
faults but this was very interesting
because you can see the faults very

clearly. You don't have to be perfect.
In fact what's great about it is
. hopefully down the road he learns
that he's being a real jerk. The
problem that I run into a lot of times
is people don't want their characters
to have those faults. I think it's only
fun when they have those faults and
you got to go for it ... I'd rather look
at a wall that has some cracks in it,
than a wall that is kind of boring."
"Our approach to the culture is
touchy because it's touchy stuff. I
know that I'm sensitive. to that and I
got to assume that everyone is sen-
sitive to that kind of stupidity
(racism). Every character I do, I
think, has to learn something, and I
think that everybody in this movie
had to learn a lot."

Books,

The Feminism and Socialism
of Lily Braun
by Alfred G. Meyer
Indiana University Press,
1986
$27.50 cloth
Lily Braun was a maverick socialist
and feminist in Imperial Germany
whom no movement would claim
because of her advanced ideas. She
has been rescued from historical
oblivion by Alfred G. Meyer, a
professor of Political Science here at
the University of Michigan. In The
Feminism and Socialism of Lily
Braun, Meyer had given us a com-
prehensive, thorough, and highly,
sympathetic biography of an in-
teresting, little-known figure whose
ideas helped pave the way for modern
feminism.
The book draws all aspects of
Braun's life into an integrated whole.
Several chapters cover the history of
the womens' movement in Germany
and its roots in the working-class op-
pression. Other chapters detail the
growth of Marxist ideology and the
revolutionary groups that developed
in Braun's society.
Meyer's in-depth knowledge of the
political and cultural climate of Ger-
many prior to World War I enables the
reader to understand the external for-
ces that shaped Bruan's philpsophical

outlook and inspired her to work for
the "feminization of a world sick with
the masculine spirit."
One also gets a picture of the way per-
sonal life experiences affected her
writing and political activity. Meyer
studied Braun's family history; in-
cluding all details pertinent to her
own life. With compassion and taste,
he tells of familial relationships
fraught with misunderstanding; the at-
tempts of Braun's parents to
discourage her from being an ac-
tivist; her rejection by her father,
Hans von Kretschman, and her cousin

and closest friend, Mathilde von
Colomb. Meyer details her relation-
ships - and attempts at relationships
- with men, and how they influenced
her feminism. Meyer's careful
examination of cultural and personal
factors together forms a three-
dimensional portrait of Braun.
Meyer gives us an understanding of
all these factors and of the ways they
helped cause Braun to become
ostracised from both the proletariat
and the aristocracy. Braun's wealthy
background prohibited her from
joining the workers' revolt, but her

sympathy for the oppressed preven-
ted her from conforming to the
materialistic, superficial, and opulent
lifestyle for which her background.
had prepared her. His treatment of
the double standard pertaining to
sexuality is equally diplomatic, and
he relates this inequity and accom-
panying discrimination to Braun's
development as a socialist and
feminist.
The Feminism and Socialism of
Lily Braun is a well-organized,
thoroughly documented book which
greatly impresses the reader with its

extensive background information
and also makes the reader admire
and sympathize with its subject.
Meyer makes one feel outraged that
Lily Braun was squelched by her
society, but leaves one with a hope
that change, however slow and pain-
ful, is possible. Braun pioneered
many ideas pertinent to modern
feminism, and some, such as
childrens' rights and the exaltation of
motherhood, which need reviewing
today.
