That's the first time our youth 'has hurt us as far as competing on the boards." The senior co-captains led Michigan in that department. Butch Wade grabbed 10 caroms and Roy Tarpley had a game-high 12 boards. "That was the key to the game- .. We controlled the boards," said Frieder, "and it gave us a lot of good situations." Situations like Wade's soft five-foot banker that followed a Gary Grant missed jumper and stretched the Wolverine lead back to five, 61-56, with about six minutes left in the game. LIKE TARPLEY'S dunk two-and-a- half minutes later, converting a Richard Rellford miss and ending a scoring drought for that period. And like Antoine Joubert's two free throws with two 2:11 left. The junior guard rebounded Tarpley's miss, drew a foul, and like Tarpley's dunk had done, stretched Michigan's two- point lead to a slightly more comfor- table margin, 65-61. The Wolverines increased that to 69- 61, with the last of Robert Hender- son's seven of seven free throws, ap- parently putting the game out of reach. With 1:13 left. Purdue, however, made one last rush. The Boilermakers took advantage of some Michigan errors, including the unsuccessful first shots of three one-and-one chances, to make it 73-71 with two seconds left. Neither Frieder nor the Wolverine players Big Ten Standings seemed too concerned about Purdue's late charge. "We took a couple shots there that didn't go and missed a one-and-one," Frieder said. "Otherwise we would have put the game away." "If we'd have made our free throws down the stretch, it wouldn't have been close," echoed Joubert. TARPLEY seemed less confident after the game. Despite leading Michigan with 18 points, the 6-11 cen- ter appeared upset at having missed two one-and-ones in the last minute and struggling with his moves inside. "I have to be stronger with my of- fensive moves, like one time I was going for a slam and I slipped and another time going for a short hook it didn't fall..." said Tarpley. "This is the worst year I've had here besides my freshman year." Frieder spoke less critically: "I was satisfied with his play. He's still got to learn to get the ball inside and just shoot it over people instead of trying to make a move." HENDERSON, who was Michigan's second leading scorer with 13, showed some good moves, and freshman Glenn Rice moved well with him, racking up eight points on four-of- seven shooting. A couple of Rice's hoops came on passes from Hender- son. "When they collapsed on him (Hen- derson), he found Glenn and Glenn did a good job getting to that spot," Frieder said. "The timing on that was perfect." Grant was just less than perfect, hitting only three of 10 shots from the field and blowing a couple of a fast breaks. Although he and , Joubert continued to have problem running the half-court offense, neither seemed overly worried after the game. "I think we're doing good" said Joubert. "I don't think we're struggling. We're in first plac We're doing well." MICHIGAN ........ Purdue ............. Ohio State......... Iowa ............ Michigan State'. Indiana ..........
