They had to make their way up the ladder just as in any profession. Fashion desinging is a difficult field to go into. Not only do you have to have the gift of designing but it also necessary to have confidence and determination. Kim White, a student at University of Michigan, has all those characteristics plus an ad- ditional advantage-she's young. Daily: When did you get star- ted in fashion design? Kim White: I started fashion designing when I was a kid. When I was in kindergarten my mom used to sew. I used to watch her but she would never let me use the machine. Instead, I would cut out fabric and put it over my head or make belts. I used to do this all the time for show and tell. All thoughout school I made my own clothes. I made my own skating outfits, but it was not until my senior year in high school that I got serious about it. D: Why designing over other forms of art? K: I always wanted to be an ar- tist and took classes in painting and drawing, but later on I decided that I felt much better when I was sewing. In fashion design, you do a lot of different things. If I was a painter, I would just paint a picture and that would be the end of it but with fashion design you get an idea, draw it, then you have to take care of the engineering probelms. After you finish that, you then have to pick the fabrics and the colors, and then try to market it. D: What kind of people do you design for? K: I basically design for younger contemporary women. I am trying to explore wild and more conservative clothing. The type of women that I would like to design for are for them women to express themselves but in good taste. D: What are your next im- mediate plans? K: This summer I want to try to market by clothing. Marketing is a very tricky thing. People either want mass-produced items or clothing by a famous designer. Also, what I really want to do this sumer is open up a small boutique or share a space somewhere to show off my stuff.I want to do this not necessarily for Deople to buy my clothing but so .t they can see it. D: What do you think the new fashion trends are going to be? K: I think that the new trend is body conscious: tights, stirrups, body-close clothes. Basic things are going to be in blacks and whites. Less Madonna-style stuff like gaudy bracelets or layers and layers of garbage will be in. Clothing will be stripped down; basic. I- J 0 0 L Her clothing: Pink, cotton, sleeveless turtleneck, $28.
