MEN'S WEAR

Malefashion

By Katherine Hansen
I'T 'VE SEEN the windows and I
like what I see. Bright stuff,
you know," says University freshman
Dave Owens. Not a bad insight from a
man who is quick to point out that he's
"not a big-time fashion shopper."
Owen's laidback fashion attitude cap-
tures the essense of spring, when
hearts are light, clothing comfort is
key, and brights are bountiful. The
message? "People should be comfor-

"Jams are here to stay for a while,"
'erse is says Jeff Cox, student and a Jacob-

season's patterned pieces are not
limited to island-inspired prints. The
timeless madras plaid is back in a
myriad of bright and deeper, jewel-
toned combinations. NuSport's ber-
muda collection includes madras
plaid and batik prints in warm hues of
turquoise, mauve, and softly-muted
black. Ah, yes-Never underestimate
the power of basic black and striking
white, both of which effortlessly join
forces with primary colors and their
limitless variations to pack a strong
fashion punch.
In addition to the very mixable,
matchable neutrals, this spring plays
host to a renewed interest in pastels.
Pink? "Um, yeah, probably," says
freshman wrestling team member
John Moore. No longer for ladies only,
soft pinks, buttery yellows, and
powder blues take on a masculine
flair. Bivouac offers the tennis
player's white cotton cable knit vest
with a catch-no navy and maroon
trim. The traditional has been
replaced by up-to-the-minute ice-
cream accents. A strong pastel im-
pression is made by pairing the up-
dated tennis white vest with a mat-
ching white-and-light-colored striped
shirt. What pastel prowess. Even the
popular tropical print doesn ot escape
the pastel touch. Bivouac's cotton
island shirts, confined by no means to
the wild brights, offer a nice surprise.
The mainstay palms and exotic
blooms appear now in sun-bleached
versions of the old favorite. Like the
louder prints' compatability with
coordinating solid bottoms, the pastel
print shirt works exceptionally well
with white or light-colored shorts or
bermudas.
This spring's versatile shoe collec-
tion offers something to complement
almost any hue on the season's color
palette. For men fond of pastels,
Generra presents the classic sueded

brights
socks at night," jokes Meza's friend
and classmate Jeff Pomerance. Here
in Ann Arbor, the sack battle will no
doubt continue with no resounding
victory in sight. But for sock lovers,
NuSport owner Mark Freedman has
good news-the slouchy cotton in-
tricate-weave boot sock (great with
hi-tops) in every color under the
spring sun, from red to black and yes,
tie-dye. For those who are less daring
but far from boring, NuSport carries a
nubbly cotton crew in the same vibrant-
color spectrum.
Even those who prefer socks will
gladly abandon them when it comes to
the almost-as-good-as-barefoot ap-
peal of sensational surfer-inspired
leather huaraches from Bass. For
slightly less casual moods or
evenings, the moccasin loafer from
Generra allows the sharp-dressed
man to exhibit the stylishness of
spring without sacrificing the
classiness of the elegant old standby.
Incidentally, the traditional penny
loafer has not skipped out-the hi-top
is to_ daytime as the loafer is to
evening.
What works well with loafers on
casual spring evenings? Pastels are
every bit as charming as day as by
night, but pinks and yellows are best
reserved for daytime and should be
set aside as the sun goes down,
making way for grey-toned blues,
sandy wheats, or sparkling white.
Shirts should be simply solid, finely
striped, or subtly checked. The classic
bluejean is a likely candidate for
complementing spring's more
neutral pastels. For dressing up the
look of a crisp, paleshirt, check out
the slacks section at Ayla for Men.
Cotton/linen pleated pants are
relaxed and calmly attractive in
grey, white, or black, done up in a
variety of textures, weaves, and
stripes. If you opt for jeans, ward off
the chill of the spring night air with a
washed-down, lightweight denim
jacket in either of two popular
shapes-the unconstructed blazer or
zip-front windbreaker, a nice change
from the usual nylon. Both jackets are
fool-proof and are available at Jacob-
son's. For topping dressier pants, try
Atyla's lightweight cotton/linen
blazers (a la Don Johnson?).
For the brights enthusiast, the
Benetton collection boasts "All the
Colors in the World" from which to
choose your favorites. Throw a big,
baggy cotton sweater over the classic
polo or even that tropical print shirt.
Then add blue jeans or never-out-of-
date chino slacks. Pull on a sweater-
matching slouchy socks, or none if
you prefer. Penny loafers are forever,
as are snow-white sneaks. Maybe,
just maybe, go all out with bright,
arresting sneakers. The possibilities
for casual evening brights com-
binations are endless. Perhaps the
evening is not as warm as it could be.
Simple-pull on a basic indigo denim
jacket. If you're fond of vintage
clothing a la the Cat's Meow, skip the
indigo in favor of a black Spanish ar-
my jacket that makes the winter-to-
spring transition with ease.

setting alternative to the more con-

are your preference, try Generra's
bright canvas low sneaker in any of
three never-fail brights-cadium
yellow, cobalt blue, or racy red. And
let's not forget the plain white
sneaker, always faithful, always com-
fy, low or high. "Hi-tops are always
hip," says freshman Jonathan Selbin.
Let's face it, the old reliables never
die. Also back again this year is the
boating moccasin, accompanied as
usual by the socks/no socks debate.
Jules Vallay stands firm in his asser-
tion that "people should wear socks"
while law student Matt Meza, who
hails from Los Angeles, disagrees,
preferring to go sockless by day or
night. "In L.A. they don't believe in
