By Gregory Ferland
THE MOVIE Just Between Friends,
billed as a comtemporary
comedy drama by Orion Pictures, is
an entertaining film filled with so
many life situations that it is hard to
believe all of them happened within
the span of eight months instead of
ten years.
The film's plot seems quite in-
tricate and confusing on paper, but it
is easily understood on film. The story
revolves mainly around the lives of
two characters and how they handle
life's problems. Holly Davis (played
by Mary Tyler Moore) is a comfor-
table, conservative housewife whose
life is centered around her home,
husband and children. The other
female character, Sandy Dunlap
(played by Christine Lahti) is a
bright, brash, competitive field
reporter for a local TV station.
The plot gets quickly complicated.
Sandy has been having an affair with
Holly's husband, Chip (played by Ted
Danson). Holly and Sandy become at-
tracted to each other while at an
aerobatics class and form a strong
friendship. Holly discovers the affair
only after the death of her husband.
Holly and Sandy break up their great

friendship and if this all wasn't
enough, Sandy is pregnant with
Chip's baby.
It is because of these plot situations
that the film is so entertaining. The
whole audience groans with each
tragedy and laughs with each trium-
ph. There are some genuinely funny
moments that made me laugh out
loud, such as the trivial talk at the
funeral of Chip to the dinner party at
Chil and Holly's house where Sandy is
present and won't even look at Chip:
also there is some dialogue with
hilarious double meanings. This din-
ner scene alone sustains mirth for
five to ten minutes.
Mary Tyler Moore does a fine ac-
ting job as always, as does Christine
Lahti (B.A. Drama, University of
Michigan). They can both cry with
the best of them, and believe me, they
do a lot of crying in this picture. The
rest of the cast doesn't fare too well.
Ted Danson as Chip is in only half of
the picture and is present long enough
to mumble a few lines, most of which
I couldn't understand. Sam Water-
son of Chip's best friend, Harry Crandalll,
is annoying at the beginning of
the movie, but becomes more likeable
as the story develops.

that is nothing short of legendary. As Such tricks lose some of their
the star of the Sixth Annual Ann Arbor relevance for audiences that aren't

accustomed to folk music. Because
folk audiences have dwindled since
the days of Hartford's popular
heyday, his act doesn't stand out as
much. He still draws a crowd, but it's
a same-old-folks crowd.
But that doesn't mean he isn't
terrific. He is, in fact, about as sure-
fire an introduction to the pleasures of
live acoustic music as can be found
today. Because he is so lively, it's vir-
tually impossible not to enjoy
everything he does.
To bring the hard sell to a close,
there are a lot of wonderful shows at
the Ark this semester, but his may be
the finest them all. Other virtuosos

man Blake may be warm , but they

aren't side-splittingly funny like he is..
Somebody like Jack Elliot may com-
pete with him for laughs, but he offers
a music that isn't as accessible to an
audience reared on pop music.
So do it, then. Go see John Hartford
tonight at the Ark. Tickets are $8.50
and are available in advance at
Schoolkid's, Herb David's, and the
Union. Show times are 7:30 and 10
p.m.
