Duke is the num- ber-one seed in the East regional. The Blue Devils only finished the regular season at the top (unanimously) of both AP and UPI polls. They only won the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Greensboro, NC after finishing first in the conference's regular season schedule. THEY ONLY have the ACC Tour- nament's Most Valuable player in guard Johnny Dawkins, not to men- tion three players on the all- tournament team in Dawkins, Mark Alerie, and David Henderson. They only have a 32-2 record coming from a conference which placed six of its eight teams in the tournament. "Being number-one in our bracket is fantastic," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "It's a compliment to our whole team. I hope we prove them right and play our best basket- ball during thetournament." Needless to say, Duke is favored to win in the East, and indeed, could very well win the whole thing, but Duke's iohnny Dawkins had plenty of time to celebrate after the Blue Devils conquered Georgia Tech last week for the ACC title. For Duke to celebrate a second time, it must again topple tough competition, in- cluding Indiana and Syracuse. does that mean an easy stroll to Dallas for the Final Four? Definitely not. STANDING IN ITS way will be Syracuse, runners-up in the Big East Championship Tournament, Indiana, runners-up in the Big Ten, and Oklahoma, which almost beat the Blue Devils earlier this season. One of the most difficult things for any team to have to do, however, is beat a conference opponent three times in one season. So while Kr- zyzewski does not relish meeting up with big schools from other conferen- ces, he is certainly not taking fifth- seeded Virginia lightly. "Our bracket is a tough one, and I don't like Virginia (being) there," said the seventh-year head coach. "Old Dominion, and West Virginia also are very capable of beating us." VIRGINIA is in a good position to be the surprise team from the East regional. The Cavaliers could very well find themselves meeting Duke in the third round, which will be played in New Brunswick, N.J., next Friday. Duke has a virtual bye to New Brunswick with a combination of weak opponents (note yesterday's game with Mississippi Valley State), and home-court advantage, playing in Greensboro, N.C., only nine miles from the Duke campus. a - 44 11117, &c A FRESH OUTLOOK ON DINING INTRODUCING W nDOW.
