West of the Mississippi, where
they play their ball on the
gridiron or the diamond, few
legitimate basketball powers come to
mind. So, to alleviate the imbalance,
the NCAA tournament committee
sends teams like St. John 's, North
Carolina and Louisville to the West
Region.
"I didn't think there would be any
question there would be a mass
exodus from the Mideast and the East
to the West because of the strength of
the overall teams," said Louisville
head coach Denny Crum. "Most of
the teams came from the East and
Mideast this year and the Midwest
was very strong too. I think the West
this year was particularly weak, at
least weaker than normal."
CRUM'S TEAM sits behind St.
John's in the No. 2 spot as the top
team at the Ogden site. The Cardinals
have been soaring, winning 15 of their
last 16 games, including the last 11.
Their 26-7 record is the product of
perhaps the toughest schedule in the
country. Of Louisville's losses, six

were on the road against top 20 teams.
With all five starters shooting over 50
percent, the Cardinals could go a long
way.
St. John's will play as far West as
possible, heading to Long Beach,
California to face "How Did They Get
In" Montana State (14-16), the big
surprise in the Big Sky Conference.
But led by 6-8 junior Walter Berry,
this year should be no different for
perennial contender, St. John's.
IN THE SAME category, North
Carolina takes its act westward where
is could end up facing Louisville. Fir-
st, the Tarheels must take care of Utah
on its home court in Ogden.
"Being the third seed in the West, I
would have hoped we would not have
to play a conference champion in the
first game," said Tar Heel head coach
Dean Smith. "And we have to play
them in their arena."
Nevada-Las Vegas enters the tour-
nament as the only team actually
from the West to sit in one of the
region's top four slots. UNLV (31-4),
begins post-season play against 20-9
Northeastern Louisiana. The Rebels,
along with Maryland, represent the
only real threat to St. John's.
