A ny school that can sell out an arena for a basketball
practice at midnight has got to be nuts about the
sport. At Kentucky, where such phenomena occur, they're
absolutely batty.
The Wildcats, the Southeast region's No. 1 seed, finished
their first season under head coach Eddie Sutton with ax29-
3 record, earning the right to play 20-10 Davidson, not exac-
tly a basketball powerhouse.
"IF SOMEONE HAD told me before. the season that
we'd be seeded number one in the region in the NCAA
tournament, I would have told them they were crazy,"
Sutton said. "Our team has done the unexpected and I'm
proud of them. It's a great tribute to our three seniors and
to our whole squad."
That.trio is led by All-Everything Kenny Walker. The 6-8
forward has dominated the Southeastern Conference all
season. Just his presence on the court is worth points.
Kentucky's toughest opponent in the first two rounds
appears to be Illinois. The Fighting Illini nabbed the four-
th seed in the region with a 21-9 record. One of those wins
was over Michigan in overtime:
"WE'RE UP IN the top 16," said Illinois head coach Lou
Henson. "I'm a little surprised at that." Henson, whose
team faces 24-6 Fairfield in the first round, attributes his
team's surge this season to its 55-percent shooting, up
from 45 percent last year.
"There s one reason for the jump," Henson said. "(Ken)
Norman did an excellent job inside." The junior center
has been the Illini's scoring threat with 16.7 points per
game along with 7.2 rebounds.
The Big Ten's other entrant hoping to reach Atlanta, 21-
7 Purdue, will see first round action in Baton Rouge.
Boilermaker head coach Gene Keady said he hopes his
team is peaking in time for the tournament. '
"We played well against Iowa and Minnesota," he.said.

Marvin Alexander (51) and Memphis State
could not block Louisville from capturing the
Metro Conference championship last week.
But the Tigers will try again in the Southeast
regional where matchups with Purdue and
eventually Illinois are possible.
"We hope to use that as a springboard to Baton Rouge."
Jumping into that same site for the opening rounds,
Memphis State holds the region's third seed. The 27-5
Tigers certainly aren't looking past opening-round op-
ponent Ball State to the second round when they may face
Virginia Tech, Villanova or Georgia Tech.
- "Ball State's the home of David Letterman," said
Tigers head coach Dana Kirk, "but they still play good
basketball."

Senior Richard Rellford sees himself as a
motivator for the Wolverines. By
providing leadership-and often a striking
assortment of slam dunks-Rellford has
been an inspiration for Michigan in its
march to the Big Ten title.
