The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 10, 1986 - Page 9 Grapplers home to host triangular meet By PETE STEINERT Home sweet home. After almost two months of away meets, the Michigan wrestling team returns to the friendly confines of Ann Arbor tomorrow when it wrestles Notre Dame and Clarion State at the CCRB starting with Notre Dame at 1 p.m. Michigan coach Dale Bahr admits he is happy to finally have a home meet. "It's nice... we tend to wrestle better at home. Anytime you travel, just like in any other sport, you have tQ sleep in different beds, and you're uncomfortable with the different t*ritory." 'THE NINTH RANKED Wolverines ;irst opponent, Notre Dame (2-0), un- rier coach Fran McCann, has updated its program over the past few years. *According to Amateur Wrestling News, the Fighting Irish had the four- th best recruiting class in the country in1985. Gibson to Of the seven freshmen on the squad, Jerry Durso (134) has been the most impressive. He has placed in every major tournament thus far this season. "They've spent a lot of money on recruiting," said Bahr. "They have an excellent freshman class. They're primarily a freshman-sophomore team, but they have good quality kids in the program.'' COACH MCCANN was equally complimentary of Michigan. "They have great talent although they have been a little inconsistent lately. Losing (John) Fisher has hurt them. "Our main objective is to expose our kids to good competition," he ad- ded. "It will be a good test to see if we can stand up against a team as physical as Michigan." The Wolverines' real test will come in the second meet against Clarion State (7-0 in the Eastern Wrestling League). Virtually unknown, the small Pennsylvania school is ranked seventh in the country and has knocked off national powers such as Wisconsin and Oklahoma State. "We got down to one minute and a half," Tigers General Manager Bill *Lajoie said Thursday. HAD AN 11:59 p.m. Wednesday deadline passed without an agreement, Gibson would have become a free agent and the Tigers would have been unable to sign him until May 1, some three weeks after the start of the baseball season. Lajoie said the agreement basically ~was one Gibson refused to accept for' months, except for an attendance bonus the Tigers included toward the i end of negotiations. Gibson will receive $30,000 in bonus money the first year, and $35,000 in each of the final two years of the con- tract if the Tigers' paid home atten- dance pases two million each year. DETROIT, ONE of baseball's best- drawing clubs, drew 2,286, 609 home fans last year and 2,704,794 in 1984 when they won the World Series. Gibson, through his agent Doug Baldwin, had demanded a five-year contract worth a reported $8 million and declared late Wednesday that the .Tigers' offer was unacceptable. Calls to Baldwin's office in Seattle were not returned. Tigers infielder-designed hitter, Darrell Evans, who has been through the free agent process twice, said Thursday that he believed baseball's owners had agreed to limit contracts to three years and undercut the free agent system. "Our strong point is that we're pretty well balanced." Although Michigan beat Clarion State last year, 31-10, they can not take this team lightly. Bahr described them as simply a "very tough" team. "They're just an outstanding wrestling team," he added. Clarion State's standouts include Paul Clark (134, 14-0), Ken Nellis (150, 11-3-1), Ken Haselrig (158, 18-1), and Jim Beichiner (190, 14-0). "Waters and Doug Wyland (118) are very important to us in the lower weight classes," said Bahr. "From there on up I look to our seniors who are all excellent wrestlers and' have won consistently for us this year."
