The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 7, 1986 -Page 11 SPORTS OF THE DAILY Ex-N.C. St. football TheKean Eye By Tom Keaney coach to 0joi M' RALEIGH, N.C. (UPI) - Former North Carolina State head football coach Tom Reed is expected to take a job as an assistant with the University of Michigan coaching staff, a Raleigh newspaper reported Wednesday. Wolverine sports information direc- tor Bruce Madej said he could not con- firm whether Reed had been hired on Bo Schembechler's staff. "ANY FOOTBALL staff announ- cements that we will make probably won't be for another two weeks or so," Madej told The Raleigh Times. But the newspaper said Reed was unofficially hired two weeks ago ana has been working in off-season prac- tices in Ann Arbor. Reed, 41, resigned from the Wolf- pack football program last December following his third straight 3-8 season. Reed had one year left on his contract with N.C. State. Former Furman University Football coach Dick Sheridan replaced Reed. Schembechler, the former head coach at Miami of Ohio, had given Reed his first coaching job in 1969. Reed later worked on Schembechler's Michigan staff from 1974-78 before returning to Miami of Ohio under Dick Crum, who left to coach the Univer- sity of North Carolina. Reed may be named the Wolverines' new defensive coor- dinator to succeed assistant Milan Vooletich who has resigned. Chicago (AL) 5, Detroit 2 LAKELAND, Fla. (UPI) - Non- roster outfielder John Cangelosi tripled in the tying and winning run yesterday to highlight a five-run ninth inning and lift the Chicago White Sox to a 5-2 exhibition victory over the Detroit Tigers. The game was the exhibition-opener for each team and the only game on the schedule in the major leagues. The Tigers scored first in the third inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Darrell Evans. Detroit held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the eighth inning whne Mike Laga homered to right centerfield to give the Tigers a 2-0 edge. Relief pitcher Willie Hernandez was called on to start the ninth inning, however, he ran into immediate trouble. The first three men he faced reached base on an error, a walk and an RBI single by Brian Giles to set up Cangelosi's game winning hit. L AST NIGHT was the undercard. Tomorrow comes the main event. Michigan's victory over a helpless Ohio State team was the cartoon before the feature presen- tation. Just tuning up before the baton comes down for the overture. Warming up before the real big game. It was the last comb of the hair before the big date. The last-minute cramming before final exams. The Wolverines have had their fun. Now it's time to bear down. Now it's time to think about playing Indiana on the last day of the regular season for the Big Ten Championship. Last night was for fine tuning their skills. Tomorrow is for using them to the best of their abilities. That's not to say Michigan was looking past Ohio State, mind you. I guess you could say the Wolverines were looking through the Buckeyes. Right through them. When Richard Rellford set the tone of the game giving Michigan a 6-0 lead just 1:20 into the game with two thunderous slams, you could almost hear him sending the message to Hoosier- land.
