Another top twenty ranking. Another spring trip down south. Such is the yearly routine for the Michigan baseball team, which is currently in sunny Florida and will play eight games in the next ten days, starting today with contests against Villanova and Western Michigan. INCLUDED in the annual spring nament Michigan won four years ago. Wolverine head coach Bud Mid- daugh has decided to bring his club back to the Sunshine State after having traveled to Texas the last three seasons. In a way, the start of the baseball season is welcome for Middaugh, but in others it is not. "We've been working awful hard," said Middaugh, who has posted an 'We want (to go to Florida) and represent Michigan the way Michigan should be represented. At Michigan you're expec- ted to win.' -Michigan head coach Bud Middaugh again, it will be hard to match last season's team record of 55 wins. "EVERY coach wants to win every game, but I think you have to be realistic," said Middaugh. "I think the thing you're hoping will happen is that your kids play within themselves. And if your kids play within them- selves and the competition is better, then maybe you can understand why why you got beat." Michigan will face host team Rollins, South Carolina and North Carolina in the week-long, four-team tournament. With South Carolina ranked seventh in the nation and Nor- th Carolina a traditional top twenty team, Middaugh said that this will be the most competitive spring trip since he's been at the helm. A disadvantage for the Wolverines is while they have done all their preparation indoors, all their com- petition in Florida is either on the lat- ter part of their spring trip or they are from the South. This, along with good competition, could cause Michigan to get out of the blocks a bit slow. "If you have the chance of working inside or outside I think you are going to go outside," said Middaugh, "and Seventh-year Michigan skipper Bud Middaugh (2697-1) lodges a complaint with an umpire in action from last season. "It (the start of the season) kind of pops up on you and you know it's coming, but from a coaching standpoint you never feel that you're ready." The 12th-ranked Wolverines will be hard pressed to match last season's 9-0 spring trip, but then hopefully as the trip goes on we will be able to improve." MIDDAUGH adds that while he is pleased with the way his team has 1 practiced, all but two regulars, Casey Close and Matt Suida, will have to be replaced from last year's team that won the Big Ten's East Division and placed second in the South I Regional during the NCAA tournament. "The thing that you hope is that you have them motivated enough and you can come up with the right com- binations out there where everybody, feels that they're getting a shot at it (winning a position)," he said. "We want to make it as competitive as possible." However, since every pitcher returns from last season and there are quality players who can take over for last year's departing starters, being ranked 12th in the nation is no sur- prise. "It's nice to think that the people think enough about your program to put you in that elite class, but at the same time you have to go out and show people that you deserve it." By starting freshman pitcher Jim Abbott in today's opener, and giving other first-year players experience, Middaugh does not doubt that Michigan's record might be imper- feet before the home opener Marc 24th. Still, he admits that he likes what he sees. "If we were to go down south and not do well, I wouldn't give up on this club because I think we have some ingredients here that if we get all cir cuits going we have a chance to be a competitive club," he said.
