4 Page 6 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 4, 1986 arner brings enthusiasm to English classes (Continued from Page 1) "They're like Oedipus or Hamlet. They have a tragic flaw - they're doomed," he says of the Sox. Garner also loves movies, especially those from central and eastern Europe. Although he forms distinct opinions on movies which he sees, he stresses that a student should not observe drama with an overly- critical eye. "I'M TEACHING an ability to go and surrender all of your emotions," he says of his classes. The professor confesses he also harbors a few more off-beat interests, such as a love for "tacky" postcards. His collection includes an Italian card shaped like a pizza and one of King Kong on the World Trade Center saying "Welcome to New York." Garner says one of his tackiest cards depicts the Last Supper - in three dimensions. "I'm an embarrassment to my friends," he says of this strange hob- by, adding that "It's impossible to find a good tacky postcard in Philly." THE WACKY side of this professor also enjoys grafitti and bumper stickers. "I'm very intrigued by pop culture. I'm interested in fads. That's where the spontaneity of culture happens," he says. "Grafitti is one of the real expressions of creative writing." He has plenty of advice for writers, regardless of how they express them- selves. "Know that you have options as a writer. Do what works. It's a con- tinued challenge to grow," he says. "REVISION is what I stress most when I teach . . . it is the key to writing," Garner says, remembering his own experience writing an honors thesis on Shakespeare, which he was told to cut in half. "Every word, I loved," he says of the work. Garner said that by ninth grade, he had read everything the playwright had ever written. ALTHOUGH Shakespeare is a big favorite, he is interested in drama from a variety of periods. "I'm fascinated by European drama written around World War I and World War II. It seemed like the world was ending," he explains. Garner's excitement about what he teaches has extended to all of the several levels of classes he has taught here. He says he enjoys teaching students of all ages. "EACH age is challenging in its own way," he says. "You really get to watch students become adults. I don't mean that to sound condescending." According to Garner, there are "certain kinds of enthusiasms that freshmen have that older students of- ten don't. The juniors and seniors of- ten know much more clearly what they want." Patrick Fetterman, an LSA senior majoring in English, says Garner's enthusiam is contagious. "He's really a lot different than most of the professors I've had, just becaust he's so enthusiastic." GARNER manages to make even large classes personal. "He makes every class a discussion . . . even if there's 80 or 90 in a class. He makes it a point to get to know everyone's name," Fetterman says. "He becomes a friend pretty quickly." Garner, who was raised in Rhode Island and holds degrees from both Penn State and Princeton University, says he has enjoyed the contrast of a large midwestern university. "U of M is a very exciting place to be. In many ways Michigan combines the best of both (Penn State and Prin- ceton)." Garner hopes that his students will get the same excitement out of life that he does. "(Students should) let themselves be inspired by what they study. Use all of your minds."
