The eighth-place Michigan hockey team went to Michigan State this weekend and stayed stride for stride with the regular-season champion Spartans for more than four periods. Michigan State, however, swept. the best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal series, 4-3 Friday and 5-2 Saturday. THE OPENING game was tight throughout. Michigan played possibly its best defensive game of the season, but it could not beat the Spartan defen- se or State goalie Norm Foster (33 saves). Trailing 2-0 in the first period, the Wolverines scored three times to end the frame, as Brad McCaughey's power play goal at 19:06 gave Michigan its first and only lead of the series. Foster then took control of the game, shutting the Wolverines out in the final two periods. The Vancouver, British Columbia native made several spectacular stops, none better than a save on Michigan's Brad Jones. The Wolverine center came down the left wing on a breakaway late in the second period, and blasted a slap shot to Foster's left. The junior goalie reached behind his back and caught the puck all in a split second. "NORMY PLAYED a good game," said Michigan State head coach Ron Mason. "Especially that one big save on Jones coming down the wing. He was in great position. Jones shot to the corner and Normy got his glove right there and took that one away. "Jones is a good player - he wasn't stopping somebody who's an average player." Junior Bob Essensa replaced Foster in the Spartan net Saturday, °and was just as effective. Essensa kept Michigan off the scoreboard until Jones scored at 10:58 of the third period. By that time, however, the home team had a 4-0 lead with four second period goals, and the Wolverines' 'tenth straight loss was assured. "WE PLAYED well last night," said Michigan coach Red Berenson after the Saturday game. "A lot of 'ifs' didn't materialize for us. "They (the Spartans) got stronger as the series went on, and they became much the better team. They proved that all year, and they proved it again here." "I wasn't surprised we won the series," said Mason, whose Spartans (23-7-2 conference, 29-7-2 overall) are after their fifth straight CCHA playoff championship.
