But the thermometer outside read eight degrees. While the bitter Michigan wind raged outside, the people dancing inside were dressed for the beach. Theme parties such as the Nectarine Ballroom's Beach Party help University students forget where they are- in both space and time. With a change of dress and a little imagination, students joined another epoch at an East Quad Epoch Par- ty, retreated to the '70s in a South Quad '70s party, came out of the rain at an Alpha Sigma Phi Hurricane Party, visited the tropics at a Law School Tropics Party, and joined the Gilligan's Island crew in a party by that name. Stacey Jenkins, a member of Delta Gamma, a sorority that hosted a beach party at the Nectarine Ballroom said, "It made you think about the summer, which in the middle of winter is a nice thought." The theme of the party sometimes dictates the music played and the drinks served, as well as the party-goers' costumes. At the Hurricane Party, the drink the "hurricane" was the only beverage served and everybody wore rain garb. There is also a pragmatic advantage for hosting a theme party. Case in point: Alpha Tau Omega's Boxers and Bow Tie Party. "Boxers and bow ties were used for convenience. You want to use things that you have or things that don't cost too much," said Pravine Rao, a fraternity member. The party' was a success-that night the men flaunted their striped, dotted, and heart-adorned boxer shorts.' One Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity member said sponsoring a theme party facilitates advertising. Bars also cash in on this. The Nectarine Ballroom has a different theme for each night of the week featuring music related to the theme.
