"We want you to relax and leave the driving to us," said Mayble Craig, patient move coordinator. The patients will travel an internal route manned by three staff teams. Each team will assume responsibility for ten patients in each move that will take 12 minutes. The lithotriper (left) is among the latest technology in the new University Hospital. Elfreida Wilson, the machine's technician, said the lithotripter is a non-surgical alternative to kidney stone removal. It dispenses sonar waves that crush the stones while the patient is emmersed in a tub of water, she said. The robo-carrier (above right) travels to designated staff control rooms transporting linen, pharmaceuticals, and food. The 300 carriers lower, raise, clean, and recharge them- selves. The 17 operating rooms (below right) are equipped with- multiple outlets for emergency care and monitoring. Kryp- tonite lighting will provide the O.R.s with the "brightest, whitest, best light," said Laurita Thomas, manager of Human Resource Development. Today's move is a culmination of several months of phasing out. The 77,100 staff members who participateds in the 800 hospital orientation sessions have a "great feeling of excitement and stimulation as they see these things taking place," said George Zuidema, vice provost for medical af- fairs. The move will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until 5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. It will resume on Saturday until com- pletion. w; Story by Katie Hutchison 4 4 Photographs by Andi Schreiber 4 4 4 41
