Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, February 7, 1986 woee0 Wolverines 4 (Continued from Page 1) ter scored 16 points to lead the Wolverines, hitting seven of seven field goals. Garde Thompson was Michigan's second leading scorer, tossing in 14 points on six of nine shooting. "HE WAS sensational," Frieder said. "He gave us big baskets, and he gave us a spark defensively." Rellford and Antoine Joubert each scored 12, Gary Grant had 11, and Butch Wade had 13 as Michigan star- ters all hit double figures for the second straight game. Michigan trailed only once in the second half, when Purdue forward Todd Mitchell's fifth straight free throw put Purdue up 61-59 with ten minutes left. THE WOLVERINES went on a 10-2 run in the next ten minutes. Thom- pson ended a three-and-a-half minute drought with a 20-footer. Grant followed with another 20-footer from the right wing and the foul shot that followed. Rellford then hit two shot, one on a nice feed under the basket from Joubert, who finished the series with an eight foot off-balance jumper in the lane. The Wolverines remain at 8-2 atop the Big Ten while Purdue drops to .500 at 5-5 and possibly out of the conferen- ce race. Michigan carried a 41-39 edge into the lockerroom at halftime, thanks mostly to Tarpley and Rellford With Purdue holding its biggest lead of the period, 31-25, Tarpley drew a blocking foul on a high post move and hit both ends of the one and one. After a Purdue turnover, a 10-foot double-pump jumper by Garde Thompson, and a fadeaway 17-footer by Lewis, Rellford scored on a jumper and two free throws. Tarpley then went to work defen- sively. He tipped one pass away in the squeak lane, and finished the resulting fast break to tie the game at 35. With two minutes left in the first half, Tarpley then stole another pass in the paint, and tossed an outlet pass for Thompson for Michigan's first lead since in eight minutes. Gary Grant continued the defensive surge, stripping Todd Mitchell and going end to end to give Michigan a four point lead at 39-35. Purdue cut the Wolverine's lead to two before the half ended. The Boilermakers actually outrebounded Michigan, 10-6, in the first half, and caused 10 turnovers, five by Antoine Joubert. Big Ten Standings Conf. By BARB McQUADE Illinois' basketball players must be fighters because they're certainly not lovers, having their hearts broken throughout the Big Ten season. "They're just a few points and a few seconds away from first place," said Michigan head coach Bill Frieder, whose Wolverines face the Fighting Illini in Urbana-Champaign tomorrow at 1 p.m., broadcast on NBC (WDIV- TV, Channel 4). Illinois, who lost to Michigan 61-59 January 8 on a Rob Henderson jum- per at the buzzer, does not have a friend in Lady Luck. The 14-7 (5-5 in the Big Ten) Illini lost to Iowa by one point and fell victim to a come-from- behind surge at Indiana. The Illinois lineup is bolstered by a healthy Tony Wysinger, who missed the season's first matchup with Michigan. With the junior guard and 6-10 center Scott Meents coming off the bench, the Illini are a formidable opponent on their home court. The last time the two teams met, the Illinois backcourt of Glynn Blackwell and Bruce Douglas com- bined for 27 points and nine steals.
