(AP) - The Color Purple, the struggle of a poor, black Southern woman for dignity, and Out of Africa, a romantic tale of A Danish writer, led the field with 11 Oscar nominations Wednesday but voters snubbed Purple director Steven Spielberg in his bid for artistic acclaim. Prizzi's Honor, a black comedy about a lovesick Mafia hitman, and Witness the adventures of a New York cop in Amish country, each captured eight nominations. The list of contenders for best picture of 1985 was rounded out by Kiss of the Spider Woman, about a revolutionary and a homosexual who became friends in jail. It had four nominations in all. The 58th annual Academy Awards will be presented March 24. The nominations reflected the in- dependence of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences voters. e, 'Africa' lead Oscar They were unswayed by the big bucks of 1985's biggest box-office hits. Back to the Future could manage only the song and writing nominations and two for sound and Rambo First Blood, Part II muscled its way only to a mention for sound effects editing. Spielberg has yet to win an Oscar, even though he has directed the all- time movie moneymaker E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial. At Spielberg's Amblin Entertain- ment, a secretary said the director was out of town and unavailable for comment. Setting aside the director of a movie nominated for best picture is not without precedent. Last year, the Norman Jewison-directed A Soldier's Story received a top picture nod, but Jewison was ignored by the Motion Picture Academy. Spielberg's star, stand-up comic Whoopi Goldberg, was nominated for her role as the downtrod wife. Also named for best act: Anne Bancroft as the ster superior of Agnes of God Lange the country singer P in Sweet Dreams, and Me as the Danish novelist Isak] Out of Africa. Unfortunately for Surreal Estate, sympathy can't overcome the disappointment of a mediocre debut record. "Pretense" means taking yourself more seriously than you should, and this Ann Arbor trio is a little too pretentious for their own good. Aside from the arty connotations of their name, they named this EP La Revolution Surrealiste (tres bon, huh?). There are some bright spots here, like the smooth, lilting quality of the title cut, and some other nice bits around here indicate a technical com- petence which may lead to good stuff in the future. But when the lyrics on this album can be distinguished, they seem to ramble on without. really meaning anything. "La Revolution Surrealiste" speaks of a revolution of the mind, and people seeing darkness in light, but, like the other songs here, SE's twin goals of artistic meaning and understatement conflict and make it too vague to mean much at all. The important problem with Surreal Estate is not their attitude, though, but their sound, which is all too often derivative and lacking in original musical ideas. "Perfect Im- perfection," and, to a lesser degree, "Right Beyond My Eyes" sound just like middle-period Police songs, com- plete with Sting-imitation vocals, and the latter contains a guitar line lifted straight off The Smiths' "Meat is Murder." "Black and White and Gray" is a silly, noisy slab of morse- code guitar and over-blown vocals. A Both the music and the lyrics here put style ahead of substance too often. Hopefully, Surreal Estate will soon come down to the real estate of solid ground with their next work. -Michael Fischer rica' stars Klaus Maria Brandaver and Meryl Streep as they vie fo ss Oscars, respectively.
