DETROIT - Chris Cichocki scored
two goals and added one assist
leading the Detroit Red Wings to a
stunning 7-0 upset victory over the
Washington Capitals last night.

star, turned aside 26 shots en route to
his first National Hockey League
shutout.
CICHOCKI rapped in a goal from
the edge of the crease to make it 5-0 at
19:05 of the second period.

Michigan Tech star Cichocki also
assisted on the goal.
Earlier in the period, an apparent
Washington goal was disallowed when
referee Andy Van Hellemond whistled
the play dead during a scramble in
front of the Detroit net.

Cichocki scored his second of the
night off a goal mouth pass from
Yzerman at 2:31 of the third period.
Smith also assisted on the goal, which
made it 6-0.
THE CAPITALS, one of the best
defensive teams in the league, were
shut down by Detroit, the league's
worst defensive squad.
Steve Yzerman opened the scoring
at 8:42 of the first period with his 14th

of the season at 5:12 of the second
period to make it 2-0. Duguay, taking
a pass from John Ogrodnick in the
corner, skated around traffic to fire a
20-footer past Jensen.
Ogrodnick fought a check by Boy
Carpenter to score his 25th of the
season, putting Detroit ahead 3-0.
Kelly Kisio set up Ogrodnick with a
perfect pass that the left wing tipped
in. Jim Leavins also assisted on the
goal, which came at 12:00.
