Michigan had previously been outscored 77-44 in that period. However. on this night period two was the period. "WE TURNED our second period jinx into a flash," said team captain Frank Downing. "Their goalie even played well but we were just getting the breaks. We got our speed going and their defense couldn't keep up with our forwards." Jones and Bruce Macnab skated circles around the Spartan defense. Despite some excellent chances,Mac- nab didn't score, but Jones added two more goals to give him a hat trick. Additional tallies by Downing and Billy Powers gave the Wolverines a 5- 2 lead after the second period. "We got off our game in the second period, and they got on theirs," said Michigan State coach Ron Mason. "When that happens at home and the home team gets some momentum, you hope to get out before you're killed." THE SPARTANS could not escape the executioner even though Mason's squad out shot Michigan 15-4 in the third period. Netminder Tim Markis was sensational in making 36 saves on the evening. "I thought the difference tonight was that Makris played well in the Michigan net," said Mason. "He made a lot of good stops in the first and third periods." Another difference between Friday and Saturday was the officiating. Referee Jim Naegles whistled 37 penalties Friday which prevented either team from gaining any momentum. It was a different story on Saturday as referee Dave Fisher was not as visible. "THE GAME had more of a flow to it tonight. It wasn't a constant in- terruption," said Berenson. Sean Baker and Bill Brauer stepped in and did a good job," said the Wolverine head man. "Jeff Norton, Carlile, and Pat Goff got a. ton of work, and they are really coming through with some of the best hockey of the season." FOR THE seniors the split of the season series with Michigan State was something special. "The feeling is awesome. The last time we play them in our rink as a senior is pretty hard to describe," said Carlile. "Seeing that they have "This is something I have been looking forward to for four years. I just love beating State," said Downing. "You think about State the whole year. Even during the summer when you are working out, you think: about the State game." For Berenson the split was just another move on the stairway to heaven in building a national power, "It makes our season credible when we can split with teams like State and Bowling Green," said the second year head coach. "It is another step in the right direction."
