Page 8- The Michigan Daily - Monday, January 20, 1986 Michigan reversal pins Purdue 'M' shines in relays by SCOTT SHAFFER With only three matches left yesterday, the Purdue wrestlers led Michigan, 15-11. But the Wolverines had the Boilermakers right where they wanted them. Co-captain Kevin Hill beat Purdue's Joe Urso 4-0 at 177 pounds to close the gap to 15-14 before seniors Scott Rechsteiner and Kirk Trost dominatedetheir opponents and led Michigan to a 22-15 victory over the Boilermakers. The win was the Wolverines' second of the weekend, as they downed Illinois 31-9 Saturday. DESPITE TRAILING after seven mat- ches against Purdue, Michigan head coach Dale Bahr was confident of a victory. "Even if we are down by seven or eight points going in to the last three matches I think we can win. "Those three guys (Hill, Rechsteiner and Trost) are consistent winners. Having them is like having a savings account in the bank," said Bahr. Aside from the final three, William Waters (118 pounds) and Rickey Moore (142) also won both of their weekend matches. Moore got his two wins in particularly dramatic fashion, squeezing out a 10-9 win against Illinois' Keith Healy and then scoring four points in the final ten seconds to earn a victory against Joe Lilovich of Purdue. WATERS SCORED a technical fall (wrestling stopped due to a 15 point lead) over Mark Sanfilippo yesterday. Bahr also pointed to the wrestling of Tony Latora as a key to his team's success. Latora went against two 150 pounders who both had notched vic- tories over the Wolverines previously and he came away with a win and a draw. The win came over Illini Kirk Azinger, who beat Latora at last year's Big Ten meet. "It felt good beating him," said Latora. "When he beat me last year I was coming off an injury. I didn't think he was that much better than me and I wanted to prove it." By JEFF RUSH Running what - Michigan women's track coach James Henry indicated was a low-key event, Michigan surprised itself with a number of firsts at the Michigan Relays. "We did not go in with high ex- pectations, but the outcome was very impressive," said Henry. "We won a majority of the relays and had a number of individual firsts." The Wolverines took the 880-yard relay, the two-mile relay, the sprint medley relay and the distance medley relay. The Michigan runners were especially impressive intthe latter two relays, winning by ten and 15 seconds, respectively. HENRY was especially pleased with Dana McKeithen, a freshman from Detroit Cass Tech who ran on both the 880 relay and the sprint medley relay winning com- binations. In addition, McKeithen set a personal best in winning the 60-yard dash in 7.21 seconds. In the men's events, Thomas Wilcher took up where he left off last year, running to victories in the 60-yard dash and the 60-yard high hurdles. Coupled with Todd Steverson's victory in the 600 yard run, the men's squad made a respectable showing at the Michigan Relays. Wilcher zipped to a 7.18 victory in the high hurdles, defeating Oliver Porter of Cleveland State by .27 seconds. Wilcher's time established a Michigan varsity record, a new fieldhouse record, and qualified him for the NCAA meet.
