The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 6, 1985 - Page 9 Records New Model Army - No Rest For the Wicked (Capital) New Model Army. Ambitious name, isn't it? For if we look into this name, we see the will to reconstruct an en- tity that is strong, disciplined and powerful in origin and theory. But these guys want to change the definition of army. Their army is a peaceful one. Their army lends support to all oppressed people. Their army is based on age- old values and morals. You can read it in the Bible. I guess things tend to come around in this manner. For New Model Army really owe their musical and polic- tical existence to The Sex Pistols and The Clash. They employ a nasty, thrashy early punk sound, but unlike their forefathers, they aren't as naive. Their attitude is almost the op- posite. They've been ground through the system but haven't lost their op- timism. They have their causes to fight for, but their music isn't just a CANTERBURY HOUSE 218 N. WALLACE, PASTOR medium for preaching. At times they are a bit self- righteous, but man, when they blast the rich and powerful in their songs you know they mean it. They know they can't change the world, but' they're going to do what they can. So you're probably saying, "I've heard all this before," and maybe you have. But hey, it's kind of nice to hear somebody fresh and full of en- thusiasm slap us in the face. They're an angry band but they're distressed about things not usually discussed in the land of rock'n'roll: They see disrespect for our elders and God. They mourn the breakdown of the family. They're a different kind of rebel. They're asking us to remember what and whom got us where we are today. It's a very traditional message. And they have a very traditional sound, using rock'n'roll basics. The disc starts with "Frightened," a nice fast rocker that questions those who don't fight for their rights and things that are wrong.. "Ambition" tells a tale of revenge and how you have the right to get it. "Grandmother's Footsteps" is a standout with rollicking drums and sustained guitars that denounces modern progress with lines like Television is flash and coke is nice and you can have the rest/Dream those dreams you've always had of wealth and power and sex. "Better Than Them" is one of the most amazing songs I've heard all year. It's all acoustic, bordering on being a traditional Irish folk-chant and condemns racism in England with lines like And we build the walls we can hide behind/And our finest weapon is our poisoned pride. "Drag it Down," the most catchy tune on the record, suggests there aren't any heroes anymore, even God: In whose eyes are we equal now?/Now that we've killed God. So what we have is a proud band with a good attitude and a strong, original sound. New Model Army has a message but still provides a rockin' good time. You can have The Clash, I'll take these guys any day. -Richard Williams Tied up at the moment Here we see Chevy Chase and Dan Ackroyd just hanging around in their new film 'Spies Like Us.,'Directed by John Landis, ('Animal House,' 'Trading Places,' 'The Blues Brothers'), 'Spies' reunites the two veterans of 'Saturday Night Live' in an action-packed comedy about two inept U.S. intelligence agents fated to saving the world from nuclear destruction.
