Take it from someone who's been there twice - Tempe, Arizona is warm, beautiful and a great place to party. Throw in the Fiesta Bowl activities, and you've got all the fixings for a great bowl game vacation. Scenery is the key word throughout the area they call the "Valley of the Sun." Lots of desert, but all of the type known as living desert, not Death Valley. Rising out of the desert are small "hills" that would qualify as mountains in Michigan, and one major mountain - Superstition Mountain, home of the famous Lost Dutchman Mine. TWISTING throughout the peaks and canyons surrounding Superstition Mountain, the Apache Trail is a truly breathtaking drive. The drive in- cludes the dams and lakes of the Salt River along the wa3 including the Roosev to National Monu highlight includes I edge of cliffs as you close to the edge twisted wrecks of before you and didn' tight turn. Well known for its u wind perilously natural monuments such as Wupatiki and seeing the National Monument and Sunset cars that went Crater, it is a must see. While it's expen- sive (the cheapest one is around $35), the view is supposedly like nothing you've experienced in your life. OTHER excellent trips within a day's driving distance are ones to the Sedona - Oak Creek Canyon, a mec- ca for art lovers; a trip to the city of Prescott; a visit to the Mogollon Rim, a geological fault; Montezuma's Castle and Well; or Tucson, home of the Old Tucson, filming site of many a western movie. In addition, Nogales, Mexico (read: mega-shopping bargains) and Las Vegas are not that far away. Travel information is available from the Phoenix visitors Bureau. For those who consider the bottom of a margarita glass to be interesting scenery, don't fret, there's plenty of action for you too. After all, Tempe is a college town, and even though most of the students will be home for break, the bars are still there. Heading the way with good food and drinks at reasonable prices is Wacky Willy's in Tempe. Specializing in Mexican food, Willy's offers two for one drinks on Sundays, two for one dinners on Wednesdays and Sundays from 4-10 p.m., and a daily happy hour from 4-7 p.m. The atmosphere and a dress is casual, and prices range from ar's first an- $6on dinners and 75 cents -$3 on dinks What a bargain. 'htlife make FOR all those Greeks making the trip, the Dash Inn is the place to go. Employee Rich Johns said that the Dash "is very much a hangout, lots of Greeks, and all students," and that it also "has the best margaritas in the Valley." (He actually said "Margs" for all you trendy folk you want to be up on all the latest words.) Food ranges from Mexican to good old hamburgers, and costs anywhere. from $2-5. A large pitcher of margs goes for $11 while a small is priced at $6. If anyone is looking to cruise the meat market atmosphere, the Devil House sounds like the place for you. Instead of a person answering their phone, a recording came on that sounded like an ad for a tractor pull at the Silverdome. You know what I mean - "lots of traction action-action action! ! ! !" It was that bad. Instead of tractors, the Devil House offers a "9,000 watt laser disc soud system and amazing high tech light show." Located in an old warehouse, the bar does offer the benefits of a large wooden dance floor that according to Tempe sources is always packed. One word of warning - the tape finished by saying "Please, no torn, ripped, or sloppily sewn clothing." Darn, count me out I guess. Other places for dining and drinking include Danny O'Brians, the Miner's Camp (maybe the best barbecued ribs in the world), Lunt Avenue, and any one of the several Black Angus restaurants in the area. AND IF all that isn't enough to keep you busy, the Fiesta folks have a slew of entertaining activities to keep you busy. The biggest of the pre-game festivities is the Fiesta Bowl Parade.
